Common tests can detect BA2 but genome analysis is needed to detect that it's the BA2 variant. It's was detected since Dec or maybe even Nov. There will be BA3, BA4, BA5 (if not already) and probably many more Omicron sub-lineage. The default should be it's all the same until data said otherwise. Delta itself has hundreds of sub-lineage.
Just as a clarification, this 'stealth' BA.2 variant cannot escape PCR detection better than other variants. PCR can still identify positive cases, including this BA.2 variant. What makes BA.2 different is that the variant cannot be distinguished from other variants using only PCR tests. The original BA.1 Omicron had a special feature on their spike protein that allows it to be distinguished from Delta using PCR tests. Not sure where that # (nearly 1200) is from, but the CDC has this: 280 deaths 0-4 years 603 deaths 5-18 years Total: 883 deaths 0-18 years Pediatric flu death avg: 118 per year (not counting the covid pandemic year where flu basically was wipe out due to restrictions). Or 236 per 2 year. So pediatric covid death (with restrictions) is ~4x avg flu death. Flu death goes to basically 0 with the same restriction. So, yes, definitely not the flu. This of course doesn't take into account long covid or long flu.
