I visited Japan years ago and was surprised by the number of people on the street wearing masks. There were also quite a few doing it in Hong Kong, although not as many. There was nothing special going at the time, no "bird flu" or anything like that. Like you said, it was part of their culture. Considering how crowded the streets and mass transit can be there, pretty smart on their part. Sadly, mask wearing has been politicized here, and we're losing people because of it.

Would any of you tell me what the hell I going on in Japan? Their Covid infection rates are so low and Omicron included. The Japanese knows something that we don’t?

 

I repeat, Omicron is the common cold relabeled.

 

Japan implemented extremely stringent border control so Omicron hasn't taken off yet.

Foreign travelers cannot enter Japan.

Residents and nationals are required to be tested before getting on plane, after landing, and required to quarantine at a designated location for 3-14 days depending on country of origin and vaccination status.

Masking is also way more prevalent and common. Both to limit spread of diseases and to block air pollution.

Vaccination rate is also higher with 78% of population fully vaccinated vs 61% in the US. Japan also had a really slow start to vaccination. US had 50% of its population full vaccinated by May 26 and Japan didn't reach that mark until September 11. So vaccine efficacy hasn't waned over time as much in Japan.

 

Didn’t they just host the Olympics recently? While your explanation makes sense, the other countries took the same route like Japan or even stricter but are having the opposite effect. There has to be more than what you’re saying. So far, most of the experts that I have been following are stumped on the case of Japan.
