1. There wasn't a push against calling it "Wuhan Virus" it was "China Virus" that people pushed back against - Bill Maher doesn't have his facts straight 2. Exotic animals was only one small tiny part of wet markets. The issue isn't wet markets, it is wild animal trade. Banning wet markets accomplishes nothing 3. Bat meat isn't really consumed in China and its debatable whether it was even sold there. Bats are used more for medicinal purposes which is still a problem. Bat meat is more consumed in SE Asia - Thailand for example. 4. Much emphasis has been put on consumption of wild animals. This is a fraction of the problem. The entire wildlife trade needs to be banned in China and the rest of the world. Wild animals come in contact with wild birds and bats and are the main conduit of diseases to humans. Wild animals are used for their skins, medicinal purposes and yes meat. But consumption is not the biggest risk, it's the actual handling and trade. The Chinese gov't is to blame because they have known for 20 years that the wild life trade is a risk for a new virus. But people need to stop focusing on wet markets and understand the real problem is wildlife.
China has back to back MVPs Most vicious pandemics this government should stop worrying about nba Twitter And fix their issues with destroying the world screw them for dissing Morey

wow. Thanks for your third grade insult. You’re struggling because you can’t argue using fact, logic and reason. Gather yourself.
China hid what? R-naught is available in January and it is obvious that the virus killed people or else where did the half a million American lives number come from(did I say 500mil - hah, good catch)? That info is all there in txtTony's post and my short reply and is all that is needed to know to figure out how bad the situation is - why are you mindlessly parroting the party line despite it? It sounds like Trump expected XiPing to explicitly tell him. "this **** is bad - please save yourself". It's simply against Asian culture to be so forthright. Can China ban eating bats? They banned eating tiger penises but people still do it.. I doubt that it is hard to catch bats (compared to tigers). But if it makes you feel better, sure ban them. (At least it is not as dumb and expensive as building a wall.) Let's ban arrogance and stupidity in white house instead - I'm sure it caused similar amounts of economic and human grief over the years. Previous administration taught Trump how to handle a pandemic, but he is dumb and has dumb people around him who love to pat each other on the back for being smart. We end up paying for it.
I am a Bill Maher fan and still am but some might not find this surprising I don't fully agree with this. First Maher is incorrect that pandemic viruses are always named from where they are from. SARS, H1N1, Swine flu, Bird flu, HIV, weren't named from areas of origin. The name "Coronavirus" has nothing to do with a geographical location but is the shape of the virus. Also the Spanish Flu wasn't called that because it originated in Spain. It was called that because Spain had the first serious outbreak and a member of the royal family got it. The use of the term "Wuhan Virus" I personally don't find that troubling as that is what it was called even in the PRC and other parts of Asia before it was identified as a Coronavirus. The problem with calling it the "Chinese Virus" is the situation we're getting into now with blanket condemnations of all things Chinese, Chinese people and even those who just look Chinese. I will state again again the Peoples Republic of China isn't all Chinese and certainly isn't all of Asia. The PRC likes to think that way and for those of you who are opposed to the PRC and the CCP frankly calling things like this the "Chinese Virus" and saying this is the fault of "Chinese Culture" is actually going along with PRC propaganda that there is only one China and that is the Peoples Republic of China and that regime speaks for the Chinese people. This virus has an official name, Coronovirus 2 2019 (SARS CoV-2) and the disease it causes Coronovirus Disease 2019, shortened to COVID 19. Maher and others are making the argument that not calling it "Chinese Virus" is somehow hampering combating it. I don't think scientists, epidemiologist and public health officials are slacking in their efforts to fight it because we call it COVID 19 rather than the "Chinese Virus". History though has shown that associating a disease with a group of people and a culture does hamper the fight against it. AIDS in it's early days was referred to as the "Gay Disease" and much of the focus on it was how it was primarily in the gay community, among drug abusers and sex workers. Attitudes towards AIDS in 1980's did actually hamper efforts to research it and combat it. Magic Johnson the other day did an interview talking about how difficult it was to get testing and research when he got HIV and the stigma round it. Maher said "some people are more willing to die from the disease than call it by it's name." I would counter that some seem more interested in getting revenge on the Chinese than fighting the disease. I've made it clear that we should be skeptical of the numbers from the PRC. I'm clear that the CCP particularly the Wuhan authorities deserve blame for silencing whistleblowers like Dr. Li and hiding the severity of it. That said they are the country with the most experience in dealing with it and even though they did things horrifically in the beginning they are sending aid to other countries hit by it and are sharing knowledge. Healthy skepticism is good and necessary but complete denial and dismissal of everything that comes from there is dangerous and if we want to overcome this disease we need their help. If anything shame of the PRC should be directed them into offering more help in terms of direct aid and sharing scientific research rather than looking to punish them economically or diplomatically. Regarding Wet Markets. I will say it again, wet markets in themselves aren't the problem. There are wet markets in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong and those places are handling this disease better than most countries and even before this disease had some of the longest lifespans and overall health. It is a failure of regulation, poor sanitation and the wildlife trade. All of those are addressed in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Blaming this on Chinese Culture is inappropriate as following Maher's own example of hot pockets not every American eats hot pockets and eating things bats and dogs is far less prevalent among Chinese than eating hot pockets. The better example would be like saying that eating bats is as much Chinese Culture as eating rattlesnake and alligator is American culture. Finally many are interested in exacting their pound of flesh from the PRC. Many of this especially Rockets' fans wanted to do so from even before this latest crisis. As someone who's been to the PRC a lot, negotiated with PRC officials, speaks the language, met with people who have been dissidents of the PRC, and most importantly has family in Hong Kong who are potentially on the front line of any major internal or external conflict with the PRC I will say this. If we want to see the PRC change and eventually either the fall of the CCP or it morphing into something that looks more like what we would like is a delicate and difficult process. I've said this before with many situations involving the PRC that external pressure is likely to backfire. Nationalism is one of the things that keeps the CCP going. On Clutchfans we have the unusual opportunity to interact with many people actually from the PRC. Many like to call them "bots" or just serving their Communist Masters, what I've found is that many of their attitudes are genuine. It is human nature to even if you don't like your own family / tribe you still will rally to defend it when it's attacked. The PRC works that way and one of it's strongest rhetorical arguments is that "foreigners are out to break apart China like they did from the middle of the 19th Century to the 20th Century." Within the PRC there are many problems and this is just the latest of them. This is a problem unlike anything they've dealt with before. It is possible that internal pressures within might actually change things. On the other hand if we essentially go to war with the PRC over this I'm pretty sure you will see a hardening of attitudes and a clamp down on reform. If we want the PRC to change I think we need more engagement with them. We need to lead by example, strengthen the forces for reform within, encourage them it is in their own interests to change rather than just look for revenge.
... my gosh, going back to trying to "name it wuhan virus"? Pray tell, why was the Spanish Flu called the "Spanish Flu"? Yet another effort to defelct blame from trump's slow response with yet another effort to blame China...
I don’t care about the trump talk here China has screwed up the nba season then the world They went after our gm F them Morey Bats Pangolins dogs Ethnic Muslims Their own citizens pademic
Just some history... It was called the "Spanish" flu because at the time people thought it came from there. And the reason people thought it came from there is because Spain was not part of the WW1 and were free to report it publicly while countries in the war, such as the US, Germany, UK, France hide it to maintain morale. With Spain reporting the new flu strain publicly, it came to know was the "Spanish" flu. The US was likely the origin. Sadly, WW1 has a big impact - the hiding of it causes it to spread widely and to become a pandemic. The number of death from the Spanish flu, estimated to be 17-50M was likely even higher than WW1 (20M deaths)
That is the most convoluted way to defend American handling of Covid19 that I have seen to date.. My brain had to lurch and do a 360 somersault to try to understand what it was getting at..
Yeah I don't think he actually intended to defend American handling of Covid19, but I can see how it can be read that way. I just posted it because I had been looking for stats on Sweden.
