I'd ask HR if they'd like for you to draft a "company use of e-mail" policy. They'll get the hint, and their response will let you know where they stand.
Good approach. I recommend... "I've noticed in the last few months we don't have an email policy," or, if you want to get snarky about it... "In the last few months, our internal email traffic has gone up considerably with lots of corporate-wide email messages, so we need to replace all our servers, increase our backup capacity, and purchase more storage."
Just send him, and e-mail saying that in general you don't enjoy mass e-mails, but that if you are going to get them, you prefer they would actually include accurate information. Then put the links showing him how inaccurate they were. Do it in as polite of a way as possible, but be very direct. And thank him for being considerate of you in the future.
Suck it up and do nothing. The DELETE button is there for something, and so is the "block this dude" button... mainly 'cuz I forwarded a similar email today, no less... yea, i knew it wasn't accurate because there was no "link, please?" to the news source, and I am always replying "research this hoax on Snopes" to hoaxes... Seriously, though, stop his *ss from sending any more UNVERIFIED emails nicely. I wouldn't stay quiet.
Something like this whether accurate or not just seems really unprofessional. I would just ask him to stop including you in mass emails that have nothing to do with work because you're busy enough with work stuff to wade through a bunch of other emails. If you want to debate him do it privately and not on work email. The last thing your office and more importantly your career needs is a D & D email war on the company domain.
THANKS IN ADVANCE. nice approach. Da-Glyde - get over it. People are going to disagree with others when it comes to politics. Just delete the email and move on. How hard is that?
As an HR Manager I can give you the legal view- 1. Read your policy manual if your company has one. What are the policies for email, harrassment, use of the internet, employee behavior. 2. If these emails violate company policy then go to the person one on one and ask him to remove you from those emails and give the reason (in accordance with your Company's written policy) 3. If the behavior continues then go to your HR manager and explain the situation. Be sure you leave a written statement documenting the issue. 4. If you are backed up by HR ask for a response that fits your company's policy. 5. There are many case examples where Companies have been sued for allowing harrassment in the work place. Some one in leadership should be made aware of these cases. 6. In order for this all to work there should be legitimate reasons that these emails are inappropriate. If they are little mo-hills you won't get anyware. If they are legitimately offensive or harrassing then they should be addressed. 7. If you do not have a written company policy concerning these type actions you should have a calm but insightful conversation with your HR people and help inform them of how companies are required to deal with inappropriate behavior, harrassment and offensive emails. If the emails are just lies but they are not degrading, harrassing or inappropriate then you should be discussing with your management work productivity and the need for a written email policy. Well all that gobbledy gook is what HR Managers deal with on a daily basis. God Bless, and good luck.
Thanks for all the help guys.. I'm still weighing my options, but truth be told I'm still very unsure of what I'm going to do.. WOW-- As I was typing this he just sent out another e-mail (See below) to all of us here in the office and others out in the field.. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/budweiser.asp
Looks like you can't find the reply-to-all button... Seriously, though, respond to him alone and be as nice and as politically correct as possible.
this is probably the most professional and tactful way to go about it. or just go directly to the person and tell them to take you off their mass email list when its not work related. i had a similar situation with one girl who would send out all these pro-bush, pro-war in iraq, if your against the war you hate the troops, america and freedom mass emails. tradertexx/basso type stuff. one day i had enough and decided to respond. i forwarded the email to not just her, but everyone she originally sent it too. due to the degree and publicness of the smackdown that i gave her, she was greatly embarrased and has not sent me a political email since.
