Yao is averaging 19 FGA per game and DA is averaging 11. I don't find anything abnormal or wrong with that balance.
Last night against the Heat? I'd rather have Wesley shooting the ball coz he had 100% FGP. And he defended Wade well by far.
Somebody has to shoot besides 20 shots from Yao. So I have no problem on who shoots it. But the key is how to shoot it. Some time it is not just the player's job to figure out who shots the rock if they are not creative and capable enough. Look at Q4 of the Heat game, everybody is trying to pass the ball to Yao. Either they missed the opportunity as they were not sharp enough or Yao could not hold his position due to his fatigue or the aggressive play by defender(s). The clock is ticking... So what's next? Shoot? Penetrate? Quit? 24-sec violation? It's not going to work if we try to initiate every offensive from Yao, especially in Q4. So coach please, figure out some other scheme to get a good shot. If you don't have a player on the court to create his own shot, you need to find a scheme to help them out. It's just your job!
I don't mind if he shoots either, I do mind when he tries to do it by himself. With TMac out Yao should touch the ball almost EVERY possesion, let him pass out to DA.... DA tries to do too much..... IMHO. Of course, it doesn't matter with Tmac back on Saturday. DD
I don't mind how many shots D.A. is taking. I just wish he would make a few more. I think everyone is pressing a bit. We saw this last year until people started becoming more comfortable with the type of offense that JVG wanted to run. No blame to Yao. The guy has not had any help since T-Mac went down. If we all new Yao would be averaging 20pts 10rebs 3blocks and 3assists after 4 games we would all have been very happy with that type of production.
I don't really have problem with the number of shots he takes. 11 a game seems about right. I do have a problem with the quality of shots he takes. Too many of them are wild shots. And 2.75 turnovers a game from a shooting guard is just unacceptable. I personally would rather see Alston taking some of the shots away from DA. At this stage in their careers, Alston is the better player.
You're right to a point, but it's unrealistic to assume you're going to get the ball to Yao cleanly on every single posession, even if Yao is trying to establish position for himself. There were numerous plays yesterday where Yao clearly couldn't get established down low. I think he's more than demonstrated the fragility of his hands if he's not properly set. If you insist on pounding it down to Yao on every posession, whether he can handle the pass or not, you're just setting yourself up for disaster and a slew of unnecessary turnovers. I would argue that the Rockets were too persistant in trying to set up Yao last night, and as a result, were forced into a lot of rushed shots (and 24 second violations). Obviously with T-Mac out, Yao is your first option, but you have to be willing to go to your second option if Yao can't establish himself.
I have no problem with the amount of shot attempts he is making it is the type of shots that he is taking that bothers me. Through out his career he was known to be a pretty decent scorer but I think, from watching his old tapes, alot of his skill is based on taking it strong to the hoop and throwing his body at defenders. With injuries and age he has definitely slowed down, and the problem now is the extent of how much he has slowed down. He's still a good passer but it his ability to take the ball in/slash, drive and get up there. I really don't know if catch and shoot was always his strong point but judging from the last few games it doesn't seem to be. Someone else on the team needs to spread out the defence so it doesn't collapse around Yao the entire time and wear him out and I guess from the choices we had, DA was probably thought to be the most logical choice. Hopefully Van Gundy can muster up some new plays which can feed off his strengths or DA improves his ability to catch and shoot.
JEEZ! look at wesley's season stats DA has to shoot the ball because no one else can create thier own shot except for yao who can only play 3 quarters. da is in a slump like everyone else but that's no reason to call him a ball hog. the bottom line is if JVG didn't want him shooting he wouldn't be in the game.
This is all going to change when Tmac comes back. DA has to shoot, we would like him to make those shots but he isn't. Someone from the perimeter needs to contribute and it might as well be him with Tmac out.
DA needs Tracy to be effective. Right now, he's trying too hard to create instead of shooting/driving only when the opportunity presents itself. He needs Tracy to distract the defense enough to either give him an open shot or a lane to the basket. Rafer may be the better player, but he's having a harder time adjusting right now. Eventually he should get comfortable enough to start creating for himself and others. His passes are very good and crisp when he finds an open player, but he's too hesitant and misses many opportunities. Comparing this moment to the end of the season, I believe Rafer has the biggest upside of any player on the team. Most people here believe (or want) that to apply to Stro.
i think he's been gettin enough touches...they were going to yao on almost every play in the first 3 qts or the heat game but when they started frontin him our guards couldnt get him the ball...could of been cause of him being fatique
DD, I am surprised at this thread by you. I think it is pretty obvious that DA is taking on the Tmac role since he isnt on the floor. Clearly Yao needs to take the lions share of the shots, but someone else has to do the damage from the perimeter. DA is one of the better "drivers" this team has so he is looking to pass or score. That's why he has the ball a lot. He has to take shots with Tmac gone. I really think DA has no problem with swinging the ball and passing it. And with Tmac back I think we will see more of that. He will easily defer. Right now DA is just put in a tough position with Tmac out. We are asking for more than he can realistically do at the moment. DA is more effective when he is taking a spot up shot rather than something "on the move". If DA, Wesley and Alston were hitting their "spot up" 3 point shots that are being created for them, we wouldnt even be talking about this.
I'd like to not always see Yao in the post. I think that it would be fine to have him take a few spot up jumpers, and see if they still swarm him. If they don't and get on our other players then we could set up a pick and roll with him and another one of our guards. He is capable of making that shot, and at 7'6 it's obvious that he's capable of shooting over people. We shouldn't just try to hammer the ball inside, as we all know that he's not that type of player anyway. It's not that he's not putting up the numbers that he should be, it's just that our style of play is taking our other player's strengths away. It's time to mix it up.
Exactly, teams will let you do what you want through the first 3 guarters, but then they lock that down in the end and you have to go to option 2 or 3, and right now, that is the problem. DD
