so just like extra day of rest there is no scientific basis or supporting data that players will perform better after a time out. :p

i'm a supporter of nba games being done like soccer where there are no timeouts and coaches can sub players during certain dead balls.

but then reinstate timeouts agains once the anthony retires.

I don't know if the timeout actually cools the other team off. Most of what we can say about timeouts is what we "feel" happens and would be based on selective memory. From playing, timeouts never felt like they were doing anything to cool me off, but I can't speak on others.

Realistically, timeouts can be used to regroup and give advice is you see something that is really hurting, if the other team is just hitting tough shots, and your team is playing right, just missing, calling a timeout isn't really going to do anything. It's likely that an opposing team is just as likely to keep going on a run as they are to have their run stopped because of a timeout, and the team calling the timeout is just as likely to make a counter run as they are to not make one, so I can't really forcefully argue one way or the other. If you feel like using them, go ahead, if not, well, as long as you can justify it.

"timeouts can be used to regroup and give advice is you see something that is really hurting". That's the samething. When a team gets on a hot streak or the team has several defensive lapses. You "regroup" and correct mistakes. Take the time to teach. That's what they are there for.

How about someone instead ask him why he played Capela so many more minutes over Rivers?

Look at Nick Nurse with Toronto. He saw his bench was hot and kept giving them minutes. VanVleet ended up playing 37 minutes and was a +28

He doesn’t have the ability to make adjustments during timeouts or at halftime. His philosophy has always been just execute the same play better.
