I don't think that really applies very much in a Rockets trade. A large majority of the cap that they will be sending out will be Terry and Kostas and those guys come off the books next year. The rest of the deal will be centered on cheap rookie deals and picks.
True but its sort of besides my initial point. I was talking about the NBA's reaction in general to the latest cap era with the "Fear of Losing" players in free agency that aren't superstars. The original point was that teams seem to be much more willing to gamble with their players they might or might not be able to keep because they have a greater payoff now if they fail to keep their players. They can recoup their losses easier. *(separate note: I bet you now that after next season some folks will logically hope the Rockets actually let Dwight walk in free agency if he doesn't take a significant pay cut so they can use his money to make multiple upgrades with other players. Lots of folks will see value in spending Les' money elsewhere.) A few years ago, Nene was the #1 free agent available & just about every team with cap space went after him. Nowadays pretty much every year you have at least 5 all-stars becoming available, and every couple years you get a Lebron free agency year. The Phoenix/Dragic & Atlanta/Millsap situations aren't going to be that uncommon moving forward with players in the 2nd tier. Players are going to continue to be on shorter contracts. Even Chandler Parsons will be able to be a free agent after next season. All of the "fear of leaving us" thing isn't much of anything. If GM's start trading players now just because they are on short term contracts out of "Fear of leaving" they won't have anyone left on their team. Teams are going to gamble more and more with their players entering free agency because... well... if you leave us, we will just spend our money elsewhere. It's all about the money, and Phoenix and Atlanta know if they are going to be competitive and offer the most money, guys like Millsap and Dragic will stay.
Great post and you made some very convincing points. Enough that I might say I'm on your side now. But I hope I'm not because I want Dragic!
Thanks. I want Dragic too more than you'd think. I especially really want Horford more than anyone. Fits so many needs for this team if somewhat healthy & perfect 3rd wheel. Unfortunately, It looks like major trades are going to be tough to pull off so we need to have the mindset that this "pursuit" could drag into this Summer actually. I mean, Flip and the T-Pups wouldn't even unload Corey freaking Brewer today for crying out loud. Everyone thinks they are good right now & everyone is just trying to draw in people to their games. Its ridiculous. I think its just going to have to take a team to be so bad by February that they think there is no way in hell my player is resigning here. I do think that there will be added depth though that will help this team finish out the year stronger than we think. If H&H are healthy (rubbing a rabbits foot) we add just 1 or 2 useful players on expiring contracts, and somebody... ANYBODY out of our youngsters steps up we are still in for a good shot to make some noise regardless.
Flip said they're keeping Brewer And just for the hell of it...thoughts? Lull/Canaan/? Harden/Daniels/NJohnson Ariza/Papa/Garcia Millsap/TJones/Scola/Dmo Howard/Collison/Scola/Dmo
Collison retired officially yesterday. I'd say he's pretty much done unfortunately. Kenyon Martin might be a better pick up if he's down to play & in shape if your wanting an old timer. Llull is very interesting. He's basically the combo guard version of Corey Brewer. The guy flat out runs the court hard, and plays solid defense. Really would fit in well with this team. However 3 major things- -Is the BAE enough to get him over here mid-season? (probably not) -Huge buyout he'd have to help eat -would he get PT- McHale and his damn comfort foods (would rather play 60 yr old J. Terry 40 minutes than anyone under 30) Llull probably either comes over this Summer or gets traded to a team that can bring him over and pay him enough to make it worthwhile. I don't think he's dying to come to the NBA like alot of folks over in Europe.
Dragic isn't staying with the Suns....they have to offer him the kind of money that Bledsoe got...you know in his mind that he feels like he is better than Bledsoe...they will trade him before the deadline to get something for him instead of losing him in free agency for nothing.
Hassan Whiteside's 9'6" standing reach is floating across the waiver wire in front of Morey's eyes as we speak. In honor of all the undersized Rockets big men over the last decade and for the love of that stale fart odor mixed with after-game body odor lather of garlic and onions emitting around the locker room CLAIM THE MAN ALREADY!
This is the best time to get dragic....most teams aren't willing to give up much for him since they are scared it could be a 6 month rental. i can see rockets giving up the NOH 1st rounder pick. If Rockets wait till free agency, they might be outspent. At least they have Bird Rights if they do trade for him.
It's still very early in the season but the Pels are only one game in the loss column behind the Rox. Not sure their pick will have the value many of us were hoping when Morey obtained it in the Asik trade.
If we're talking about experience without having to give up assets, what about either Ray Allen or Shane Battier? I know Battier retired, but in a recent interview he said something like whilst he's not intending to play again, it's not impossible. OK so it's not a Dragic or a 3rd superstar, but both have tremendous experience, respect and damn can or could they play.
Lol @ signing battier to play. I'd love him to coach our guys but not play. He's less agile than Garcia right now
Suns don't have to take any bad assets or money back and get a future 1st rd pick regardless if the Pelicans end up in lottery. Right now not many teams are going to give up their high 1st rd pick for a possible rental of Dragic. I can only see Morey really doing it.
