Yeah, but tell me that Jason Smith, Samuel Dalembert, or Cole Aldrich wouldn't be an upgrade over Black and Dorsey.

    Cyber, thanks for the update.

Question: Do you think Morey's initial offseason pursuit of a 3rd star (presumably, Melo) was actually the work of Les Alexander, and not our GM? We know how much he loves drawing big 'names' to Houston (Drexler, Barkley, Pippen, Lin, etc).

I only ask because all we've heard from Morey (during camp and early season) is how important it was to shore up the defense. Our offense was never really the problem last postseason. Yet this logic doesn't fit with his pursuit of Melo. Although, his secondary pursuit of Bosh would've addressed both ends beautifully.

Now it seems that Morey is poised to build around our 2 stars, which makes sense in going after a tough, solid (non-super star) stretch 4 in Millsap.

Any thoughts as to why the change of course?

Millsap was an All Star last season. It's going to take a down year to stop him from getting paid like a star in free agency.

I'd think making a move for Millsap would be better if we did it this season. That way we see how the team looks with him, and he's expiring so we can still have flexibility to go after a guy like Rondo/Dragic in the summer if we don't want to keep Millsap.

True, but there's a difference between being a perennial all-star after 7 seasons in the league, and only making your first all-star game since entering in 2007. As you know, Millsap falls in the latter camp.

He'll get paid well, but not near the super-max like real '3rd stars' (Bosh, Griffin, Love, etc).

He will likely get a max deal. Pretty much every team is looking to be reckless knowing that in a couple of years they will have a significantly higher cap ceiling. The question right now is, "do I have the money to pull this off now?" and "does this player make my team significantly better?"

...there will be a lot of teams who answer yes to both of those questions. All these marginal guys who got max contracts this past summer where the effect of "these contracts won't be a max deal in the new CBA"

.......but won't get offered a contact by the Rockets unless they miss out on other free agents like Lamarcus and Marc Gasol or have limited cap space because they traded for a star level point guard before next summer. ;)

So are they throwing the 3 star thing out the window? Also, is he the top target (assuming Love stays)? I could easily see us missing out on him while we chase star players.

Unless the Rockets gut their roster, Millsap seems to be out of their price range if he wants star money, like $15mil/yr. If Morey really wants him, might as well make Atlanta an offer at the deadline and use early bird rights to re-sign him.

ya that sounds a lot more likely. if morley has been targeting millsap so bad we could have just swapped asik for him from the get go. waiting all this time to deplete the roster in order to pay him $15M next summer makes little sense. not buying it.

they have the shortest frontcourt in the league. you're right they may be high enough on millsap to try and re-sign him. but that means they let go of horford then..

We have nothing they would want seeing as though they will make a playoff push

jones + NOP pick + stuff might be enough considering millsap is expiring. depends on how confident they are he won't bolt.

I don't see how that helps them in the playoffs at all. I don't think they trade for picks tbh, i think teams like the bucks/nuggs have the best shot at landing millsap

i agree it's a longshot at best. what could work in our favor is jones having severely outplayed millsap head-to-head in our home game last season…..and millsap wanting to possibly play only for a contender. additionally, it could be worked in a 3-way deal where another team does have a need for our trade package

I wouldn't be expecting much from the deadline since all the teams are now hoarding picks and are waiting for the cap to rise, could be anouther brooks-> Hamilton trade period,.

I just don't see the value players who out us over the top being dealt
