    No, he's Daryl Morey.

One reason Morey could have significant interest in Faried is that his cap hold is relatively small next year. He's on the books for just $5.6 million. So if we have only the following under contract, that could still leave us room to sign a significant free agent:

    22.4 - Dwight
    15.8 - Harden
    8.2 - Ariza
    5.6 - Faried
    4.2 - Cap Holds

    Total: 56.2
    Projected Cap: 66.5

That would leave the Rockets with about $10 million in cap space, but if the cap surprises on the upside (which some have speculated) you could have $13-14 million which gets in in the territory for Rondo, Rubio, Bledsoe, and maybe even Dragic.

Ultimately, it's not really having cap space itself that matters......it's the threat of having cap space.

    lol

Faried could be traded easily and get nice assets back so he is team friendy. The problem is his value has risen since FIBA started and to get him will take too much of our assets.

The one question I have that nobody can answer with a straight face is why in the world the Nuggets would want to trade Faried?

Just off phone with DEN GM Tim Connelly. Nuggets are meeting with Kenneth Faried's agent next week, hope to sign him to an extension.

    ‏@ESPNSteinLine
Faried clearly wants to stay with Nuggets and is mounting quite a contract drive as negotiations continue on extension to keep him in Denver

The Nuggets are obviously already interested in bringing him back, and all indication is Denver is where Faried wants to be. Honestly, people are getting all worked up over nothing with Faried. Id be willing to guess that he's signed to an extension before the season starts, and if not, the Nuggets will still think they can keep him in free agency next Summer anyways.

Even if they did feel like he's going to walk, they have the whole season to change his mind, or can wait up until the trade deadline to move him which I doubt they will. I'm sure they feel pretty solid about keeping him in free agency regardless as long as they pay up which they almost certainly will.

Well the Nuggets have three guys who are worth 10+ million (Faired, Lawson and Gallo). Along with their role players they are up to nearly 73m in payroll. I am not sure ownership would be on board with a 73 million dollar roster that might not even sniff the playoffs. I definitely think something has to happen in Denver. Whether it is Faried or not, I don't know. But that guy could definitely get a max contract on the open market and that would put them well into the tax.

there are only three guys on their roster that are worth anything...faried, lawson, and that rook.

i think they should try to unload everyone else.

faried/lawson trade combo would be really good though if a star becomes available

You know.......I hadn't thought of that. It's really not a bad idea.

Lawson isn't untradable, but neither is he a great value. His FG% has decline every year since he came into the league. He was 51% from the field and 41% from 3 as a rookie........just 43% FG and 36% 3 last year. The problem? Mid-range shots. Most of his increased volume has come from there, and he's not very efficient at it.

His contract runs through 2016-2017, which Morey may have a problem with.

But still, Lawson is a good fit next to Harden (at least on offense). Still not sure I wouldn't rather develop Canaan, Johnson, Beverley, and Llull, but if you have to take Lawson to get Faried, maybe that makes sense.

I don't think anyone thought Faried was an achievable target, but his value, not just to Denver, but in general is a question a lot of people have wondered.

Good points. Somewhat similar situation to the Harden situation. Denver is a team that probably cares about their payroll and taxes, similar to OKC.

Morey might not be the first call the nuggets make, but I would't be surprised if he's the last. OKC wanted Thompson......GSW said no. Then they wanted Wall.....Wizards said no. So then they came to Houston, who didn't have a star to trade but had several "pieces"......just like we do now.

I think there's a deal to be worked out here.

In my opinion he's a 3rd big in a championship big man rotation. At most, Taj Gibson money. ...approximately $8 million per season.

In my opinion if they pay him more the contact becomes a boat anchor. I would not want him at $10 million per.

I know there are plenty of posters that will laugh at that but the combination of undersized and not being able to shoot makes me limit the money. I like him a lot. I'd love him at around $6 million per. Would not want him for $10 million per or more.

This I agree with. A team friendly contract in the range of Ariza would make him very attractive. His play in FIBA though means Denver will want some nice assets though. I am sure many teams would make some nice offers.

I agree, though I think I could go to $10, but not higher.

If I'm Faried, I wouldn't want the extension right now. Prove that you can defend and shoot some, and then hit 2015 free agency with better value and broader market appeal.

He wants Ibaka money, but he doesn't impact the game near to the level Ibaka does right now. Ibaka is a decent defender, elite rim protector, good rebounder, and a very good mid-range shooter. All of that got him $12 million/year.

Was James Harden an "achievable target" as of September 5, 2012?

I think the odds on the Rockets landing Faried or Dragic or any specific top level player is low, but I wouldn't rule any of them out, either. Seems like that Morey's tactic here is to just keep on trying for these low probability valuable targets and hoping that one of them will pan out. Even with a low probability event like Andre Drummond's free throws, if you have enough attempts, the probability of having at least one successful outcome can be decent.

Solid post. Another thing to think about is the Nuggets are paying Javalee McGee $12M a year. Do we think Faried will settle for less?

Denver ' s interest in a Faried extension is not altogether about keeping him long term. Take that to the bank.

Dude, you need to email me. :) If I may quote Hal Holbrook and Robert Redford from "All the President's Men":

Basketballholic (Deep Throat, i.e. W. Mark Felt): "You're just gonna have to find that out for yourself, aren't you?"

ROXTXIA (Bob Woodward): "I'm tired of your chickens*** games! I need to know what you know."

Did it happen yet? Bledsoe? Dragic? Faried? Lebron?
