I agree. Had this not happened there was a good chance he would have accepted $2.5mm to stay and we would have gotten a bargain. Now Dallas probably pays hi, $10mm and he's gone. Worse yet, they could still poison pill KJ.

Josh Smith won us a couple really big games and I am find to have him come back but man do I hate watching him play. Seeing the Mavs overpay him to go there is not the worst thing I can think of.

They wouldn't have to tie up money. $15 for a one year so he can hit the market again next year. Why not? What else are the mavs going to do with $20m in cap space?

Listen I like smith on our team but the bigger problem is we can't trade jones as easily if he leaves which impacts our ability to trade for a pg.

This has been my thought process for the past couple of weeks. Josh rendering TJ expendable is incredibly valuable in and of itself. Not sure what kind of guard help you can expect to get with Kostas' contract as the primary asset. :/ The Mavs making a(nother) dumb decision wouldn't make me feel much better about it.

Losing Josh would be awful. Definitely would hurt us. Might have to give in and offer him the MLE so he stays.

Er, why can't we trade Jones even if we lose Smith? McHale's probably chomping at the bit to play more small ball anyway. Ariza at PF here we come!

Josh ain't leaving the Rockets. Morey has been after him for years and to finally have him you'd be out your mind to think he will just give him up

I think Smith would be looking for something more long term if he's going to forfeit the chance to contend.

I do agree that losing Smith would have serious downside, and we'd have a hole at backup PF and fewer trade assets available, but if the Mavs offer a big multi year contract to Smith, it'll be more funny than annoying. A one year deal, more annoying than funny.

Thank you. I don't care about making the Mavs worse. They do that on their own. We need to keep the key pieces and bulid chemistry.

I'd do Jones, Dekker, a future 1st + fillers (Papa, Prigs) for Lawson.

    PG: Lawson / Beverley
SG: Harden / Terry / Johnson
    SF: Ariza / Brewer
PF: Motie / Smith / Harrell
    C : Howard / Capela

Would be a pretty bad ass roster IMO.

If the Rockets see a good deal out there involving Jones or DMo or Capela or whoever, I doubt that they let the absence of Smith stop him.

Whats the point for Dallas getting Smith
They need to suck, because Boston own their pic and is top 7 protected.
And Dallas wont make the playoff anyway

Dallas has so much stuff to fix now. Would be surprised if he went to smith first.

Hoping the smith rumor was akin to "LA to LA"

I mean Josh is still getting paid by the Pistons, so do you go to the Mavs and miss the playoffs for $8mil+ more? or contend with the Rockets?

This. DM has proved that he can find productive bench bigs with relative ease.

the MLE wont' mean anything if the Mavs offer a 2 years $20 mil total contract or something to that matter.

It really makes no logical sense, but it would be the petty and spiteful thing to do (i.e., Cubanesque).

DM might not have a choice if the Mavs offer him twice as much as we can. We can only give the full MLE.
