I think it's just a matter of money and cap flexibility. If the Rockets are to pay him more than $2.5M or so, they will need to use the non-tax-payer MLE. But that MLE is also the only thing that will allow them to pay KJ McDaniels more than $1.1M (by matching a restricted FA offer from another team or agreeing to one with him themselves) or any outside free agent more than the minimum salary. So, the Rockets probably want to hold on to that MLE until the KJ situation is settled. KJ is more likely to just go with the highest bidder right now-- young guy, want minutes, hasn't gotten paid anything yet. They are probably hoping for Smoove to take a discount for one year since he's made a lot of money and is getting paid by Detroit (and there's the setoff thing, too). Josh Smith probably has some outside offers at more than what the Rockets offered him, but my guess is that the teams offering him the $ aren't all that fun to play for (Kings, for example).
The plan all along was to hope Josh would re-sign using non-bird rights. The fact that he hasn't agreed to a contract from another team is good for the Rockets. I don't think there is any doubt that Houston would love to have Josh back. The ball is in his court but it has to be for the 2.49 million using non-bird rights.
Yes, definitely still LOTS of moving parts re: Spurs, contracts, etc. but 99% sure Mills stays. Need him and LMA and he are friends/ex teammates. On Parker, I think his destroying days are over unfortunately, but I'd actually be surprised if he didnt have a better year this year. And if his 3's improve again this year as last, that will help his game TREMENDOUSLY. If we lose anyone it's CoJo and that will hurt. He really has become solid both ways. So much depends on TDs deal, Manus return, still POSSIBLE S&T with Por..not really a cap guy, but theres no doubt a lot of things to still work out. Starting to hear Nikola Multinov is real possibilty this year...he's put on a much needed 25 lbs. since any clips were shot of him from Partizan. We also still have like 13 overseas guys that are SLIGHT possibilities for final bigs (And very possible that we might have to bring on Livio Jean Charles from France as I think he's in position to force Spurs hands. Dont think Spurs want to lose him)
What I've seen I don't like, but since the track record is virtually non-existent, why are you confident he's a viable player? I'm now all about Lawson or bust. Shooter and playmaker; would be a good fit if he can shut up and play.

I knew it..I was right to ask you guys yesterday on why you believe aldridge will sign here...it's too obvious that he will go to the spurs..there's no upgrade made on our end at all as of right now unfortunately and we are losing on a lot of FA's, I hope there is at least a trade
The terrible, horrible, no good, very bad truth: yes. Lin to the Rockets makes sense. Face it. Yes, it is July 4th and I've had a bit to drink. And yes, his fans will drive me to suicide. But all the same, I could see it happening.
Would love to see running out there with brewer, dmo/jones, Capela... But it's just too much that drama that would come & sometimes its best to move on
