The most important part about post offense is a quick and early entry pass. This trumps post position IMO. If you can pass into the post before the D can get set, it is a lot easier for the post player to go to work. Once the D gets set, you will need a lot of skill to score in a crowded, set interior D. The biggest issue with our post is Beveriza. This 2 headed, inept combo simply does not know how to pass into the post at an elementary level, especially Beverley.
Thanks Cyber, I think this will be a interesting conversation with him. I'm sure Dwight would have his ego a little bruised if they tell him they don't want to give him post ups any longer because it slows the offense down and it does not produce enough consistent points. He has games where it does work, but for the most part there are a lot of empty possessions and TOs. I think he would be better getting the ball on the move around the paint (PnR) instead of arm fighting for post position 5 ft outside the paint and then trying to back the defender down. That just looks ugly. I do think J Smith could help facilitate offense from the PF position. He would look for his boy in the paint so that should help and Prigioni is a pass first PG that would surely look to give him the ball around the basket. So he would still get his touches, just in better postions to get to the rim and finish strong. Let's see if he buys in!
This is music to my ears. Putting him in an Asik/DeAndre Jordan-type role with D-Mo being the offensive anchor in the post on the other side of the court is going to make this team deadly in the playoffs. Trying to run any semblance of offense through Dwight while Harden is on the floor is a complete waste because it's inefficient, the ball doesn't move around, he struggles big time when defenses collapse on him, and he's a terrible free throw shooter. And the biggest benefit of all is that we'll add to his longevity by taking the burden off of him physically.
I agree... There's times when Howard runs the court has his guy pinned under the rim and doesn't get the ball. But the truth is that there's only a handful of times that actually happens in the game. If Dmo is able to get the ball in the post and score then there's no reason Howard can't. It's the same people passing the ball. Howard's regressing athleticism and power have made his post ups hideous. I remember watching Orlando he was too quick and strong for everyone no matter where he caught it. Yes! Bevs is not a great passer but Howard isn't running down the court and pinning his guy every play either. He needs to be able to work in the paint when it's croweded. But that's not who he is anymore. If he can become the Tyson Chandler of this team and the ball doesn't stall with forced post ups for Howard then Houston might just have something. I just don't see how excited Howard will be about this new role and if he will completely buy in.
100% of dwight on D makes such a huge impact. I really hope he realizes his own limitations and becomes that defensive anchor he can still be. Offensively he's lost too much of his explosive athleticism to be the paint threat he once was. but if we limit him to dunks and P&R (effectively eliminate the dwight post up and give all those touches to Dmo) then all the pieces of our team will fit and complement each other quite well. bev is the enforcer harden is the go to superstar ariza is the swiss army knife on d dmo takes care of the paint offense dwight runs the p&r with harden and clogs up the paint on d like a well oiled machine
You are very right!!! And that could be the angle they take it at Howard. By making his new role a defense, rebound and PnR guy this could prolong his career a bit! He might like that idea given his health issues as of late! He has like 12 kids so he needs to keep getting pay checks lol
IMO (and I have played post in highschool, college and still do to this day) the most important part of post offense is getting good position and giving your teammate a target to pass you the ball. You have to get your hips low and your feet wide to win and establish your position on the block to receive the ball. Dwight plays with his hips to high (tries to use his shoulders and arms to overpower defenders), that is why guys push him off the block and outside the paint. He never gets the spot and gives "Beveriza" a good target to throw it to him. They are often waiting for him to get settled to receive the ball. Watch film on the great ones and the good ones today. They get the position and keep it (low hips). Makes for a easier pass.
This would be fantastic. And KUDOS to Dwight if he goes along with it. There is NOTHING wrong with Dwight taking a Deandre Jordan/Tyson Chandler type role and being a defensive terror. Give the "post ups" to Dmo and get Dwight the ball on Alley-oops and pick and rolls. Less turnovers in the half court offense and better efficiency. PLUS, less energy for Dwight to consume, where he can focus most of it on defense. A reduced role also might make it interesting with regards to Dwight's next contract as well.
I definitely agree that Dwight is not a post player anymore where he can succeed in the post even with poor entry passes, but that was actually not the point I was trying to make. My point is that a good entry pass will allow Dwight to use his explosive burst to score in the post before the D is set and take advantage of unset 1v1 match ups. We all know Dwight isn't a good post player. Good post players establish the position you refer to, because they are good. If Dwight was good at consistently establishing post position and playing the post, we wouldn't be having such headaches with him to begin with. A good entry pass however, allows the post player to initiate quickly however and can help the big compensate for poor post positioning and play. Just my opinion of course.
Is that the last day they can be bought out and still join a playoff team or is it the last day a bought out player can can still clear waivers and join a a playoff team
Dwight doesnt strike me as the kind of guy who's going to go calmly in the night. He wants his touches. He will get his touches. He didnt come here to be a defensive anchor.
