Very much agreed. That's mainly why I think Morey won't pass up the opportunity to get a true title contending team in the present. Worrying about the team 4 or 5 years down the line is counterproductive.
You are right. You could punt TWO YEARS of Harden/Dwight on the chance that you could snag Kevin Durant. Dragic messes with that possibility. I for one am not interested in that. If the Rockets do nothing this trade deadline and nothing in the offseason to go for the gold in order to preserve flexibility I am not going to even bother watching next year.
I am so glad there are no games while this mess goes on, gives the players a chance to settle in once the deadline passes. Well done Adam Silver. DD
If Kevin O'Conner's numbers are correct then: Dragic will re-sign with whatever team he is traded to or re-sign in phoenix if not traded. I would be SHOCKED if he stays to his word and leaves. Dragic signed a 4 year/30M deal (4th year option) in 2012 he will be paid 22.5M of that contract for the 3 years since he is opting out. The 5th year of that max deal is worth 25M alone - this is not accounting also for the higher % raises each year - so in total he would be leaving 28M on the table if he went for a 4 year max of 80 million elsewhere. 28M for a guy who didnt make that much money the last 3 years combined Dragic isn't a star that can recoup that sort of cash off court - he can earn some of it back but not that much he isnt a Dwight Howard/Kobe/Westbrook etc type player that is signing all the endorsements. Players always follow the money when it comes to max deals.
I'll probably still watch, but I get this sentiment big time. It's time to build a real team..put them on the court..and compete...even if that costs some flexibility. We've won exactly one playoff series in the 10 years that Morey has been here....it's time to stop worrying about what our cap flexibility is going to look like half a decade from now.
If I were Phoenix I would call his bluff and dare him to leave the $25MM on the table. Especially if they aren't able to pry DMo out of us.
Good for him to be open about it. I can imagine someone else in this situation acting like everything is fine and being super awkward a la Dwight and SVG.
You are right and I'd end up watching because I'm an addict, but I'd be so depressed that we wasted two years of Harden's prime and basically the last year of Dwight's for a shot at a player that is incredibly remote.
