He's still not fetching a 1st round pick in a trade or a significant asset in a trade. The injury is unfortunate, but this still means we only have a very small sample size of Canaan actually playing well. There really isn't enough information to distinguish Canaan from a number of young players who have had a handful of promising-looking performances. And what exactly has Canaan shown in his good games? Has he shown that he'd be something really special or does he look like just another small fast guard who can score some points? The NBA is full of the latter. Why give up an actual asset, like a 1st round pick as one poster suggests, when you can just sign Aaron Brooks for the veteran minimum or even go with the luxury model Isaiah Thomas at $7M a year?
Since we are discussing making room for Josh Smith, I can see 1 of 3 options (1) Phoenix caves (takes big man & promising G + C) & Orlando wants to make room for Aaron Gordon HOU In: G Goran Dragic (PHO); G Zoran Dragic (PHO); F/C Kyle O’Quinn (ORL) PHO In: F/C Brandan Wright (BOS); G Isaiah Canaan (HOU); F/C Clint Capela (HOU); NOP 1st (via HOU) BOS In: F/C Joey Dorsey (HOU); $1M cash; 2015 PHO 1st (if 15 – 30) ORL In: F Kostas Papanikolaou (HOU); MIN / DEN 2nd (via HOU) (2) Phoenix caves & Orlando realizes what a talent O'Quinn is: HOU In: G Goran Dragic (PHO); G Zoran Dragic (PHO) PHO In: F/C Brandan Wright (BOS); G Isaiah Canaan (HOU); F/C Clint Capela (HOU); NOP 1st (via HOU) BOS In: F Kostas Papanikolaou (HOU); F/C Joey Dorsey (HOU); $1M cash; 2015 PHO 1st (if 15 – 30) (3) Rox just need to clear room for Josh Smith (most likely) HOU In: C Henry Sims PHI In: F/C Joey Dorsey & F/C Tarik Black + $1.5M cash FYI: today is the first day that Zoran Dragic can be traded IIRC
I do agree that he's def not going to fetch a 1st rounder. I didn't see who suggested that but that is pure homerism to suggest. Most first round picks aren't worth first rounders AFTER they are drafted and ahow up in camp. Most 2nd rounders hardly keep their value at future 2nd round pick level in their first couple years. It's like driving a car off the lot. I'll go ahead and say he has value, and he's going to be a player GM's want included in a trade package but nobody is seeking him out by offering a first rounder. At least not in the new NBA with the new school gms that value picks like Gold.

Well it was a good idea to see what trades might be available before you just waive someone but at the end of the day, other gms know they have to get rid of someone so they are almost always gonna take a gamble on getting the player for free. However some gms might kick themselves later if someone like Canaan was available for a second rounder.
I just wish there was some way of knowing who the Rockets were going to waive to make room for Smith. Just can't find that information anywhere.
Rockets practiced due diligence. They could have waived Black on Wednesday, but it seems they tried to improve the team with a trade. Obviously nothing came out of it, but most were expecting this move of waving Black. Team is going to be exciting to watch make a run for a title.
Didn't Cyber say Black was the next to go? or was it Dorsey? still pretty solid reporting on his part.
