Pair of Kings likely to leave
Songaila, Mobley plan to opt out of contracts

One provided inside muscle off the bench with a deft touch from the outside.
The other added potent offense, a scoring, slashing presence whose long-range ability was among the league's best.

Yet the versatile Darius Songaila and Cuttino Mobley may have honed their crafts as Kings for the last time. Songaila's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said it's likely the reserve will opt out of his contract before the June 30 deadline. Songaila, entering his third season, has a player option on the deal that would pay him $1.76 million in 2005-06. He was the 10th-highest paid King last season.

"If had to guess, that's what would happen," Bartelstein said of Songaila testing the market. "He loves it in Sacramento, thinks the world of (coach) Rick (Adelman), (president of basketball operations) Geoff (Petrie) and the coaching staff. If he chooses to opt out, it's nothing against Sacramento. He just sees the value of a (new) contract."

Bartelstein said he hasn't spoken to Petrie, though he plans to soon.

Mobley, meanwhile, announced Friday on Fox Sports Network that he planned to decline his player option for next season.

"I would love to play for Sacramento again, but I'm going to have the opportunity to opt out," Mobley said on "Best Damn Sports Show Period." "And I think it's best for me, and for my family and for the future of Cuttino."

Mobley averaged 17.8 points per game and shot 44 percent as a King. Songaila averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds last season.

According to Kings media relations director Darrin May, Mobley has not contacted the Kings about his decision. Petrie and Mobley were unavailable for comment.

Songaila and Mobley would be the first departures among the at-risk Kings. Center Greg Ostertag has said he will return, exercising the option on his contract worth $4.4 million. Guards Maurice Evans and Eddie House are free agents who have yet to be addressed, and Petrie has said that the Kings will pick up the team option for guard Bobby Jackson.

But unless the NBA and the players' union agree on a new collective bargaining agreement before July 1 and avoid a lockout, the moves may be moot. Negotiations stalled last week, but Commissioner David Stern said Tuesday that talks are ongoing.

"Especially with the team we've got right now, that wouldn't be good," guard Kevin Martin said of a possible lockout. "I think it'd be unhealthy because everybody loves basketball. The fans make our league go. That would hurt the fans as much as the players."

looks like Mobley was scheduled to make $6.3 mil next season:

So my guess, he wants $8+ and a longer deal. Dont think thats what the Roxs would pay him. I would love him to come back, but I dont see it happening....

if JVG/Rox mgmt think that Mobley can be a good fit and Cat agrees to become role player under JVG system then why not..

and what if Steve and Cato somehow come back too, Rox will be young and athletic once again..

    C - Yao
    PF - Cato
    SF - TMac
    SG - Cat
    PG - Steve

Mobley should get something similar to what Stephen Jackson got in Indiana. That's what he is worth.

Basically he thinks he can make more than 6.3 mil. Dont think we are going to sign him multi years for 7 or 8 or more mil a year. Hang it on Mobe now. There are plenty of teams where he can shine. Cough cough, hawks, hornet, bobcats, cough cough

I think Mobley could probably be good here, but I don't forsee CD and JVG breaking their backs to get him, either. As far as I'm concerned, the Cuttino experiment is over for the city of Houston.

I spoke with Cat this weekend. He said he would love to come back home.

I think he would be perfect for this team.

He's bold. The CBA clouds not withstanding, he's going on the market and competing with Redd, Allen, Larry Hughes, and Joe Johnson for those dollars. Bobby Simmons, Bonzi Wells (team option), Spree, Kyle Korver, and Flip Murray can all act as cheap alternatives if a team doesn't want to spend much above the MLE.

Not saying he isn't worth $7 per, but if he's dumb enough to hold out for big dollars, well, teams will plug their holes with other guys without much problem. Only a handful of teams are under the cap, and guys like Donyell Marshall, SAR, and Stromile Swift are also looking for contracts.

Mobley could be staring down a paycut if he isn't careful.

I think he understands the market situation. He is looking for a longer deal.

bout the same of what Mobes is getting now

$38/ 6 years which rounds out to $6.3mil

Wow, that is competition. While it would be sweet and sentimental to bring Cat back, the name on your list that would be best to have long term for the Rockets is Joe Johnson.

Work your magic CD. Just go out and get us Chandler, Marshall, and Johnson. That's not asking too much, is it? We'll let you slide on whatever you decide to do at PG.:D

    bigboymumu,
That's great news. He's been my favorite Rocket from his rookie year all the way through. Fastest first step in the buisness, and can stay with anyone defensively. Makes us a much more versitile team because, unlike Wesley, he can get his own shot.

    Mobes, please come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can swallow the circus shots, you're a winner.

More interested in Songaila than Mobes. Could be a decent pf addition and within our price range.

Hadn't even thought about him ...

Ward could run the point with those additions.
