Congrats, Coogs! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in the day, I was a UH hoops fan before I ever even dreamed I'd go to college. Back in the days of Sam Mack, Anthony Goldwire, Craig Upchurch, etc.....

Regardless, 18 years? Damn, makes me feel old. Still going to be pulling for my Horns, but a little part of me was as ecstatic as can be to see the Coogs pull it off.

Congrats, UH fans and alumni out there!

Re: seeding.... I think they are definitely looking at a 13 seed, tops. You look at their profile, and they definitely will be put in that 13-14 range.

Will they be in the South Region?

    I see them as a 13 also.

Houston probably would have won by more had it not been for Coleman absolutely chucking it up there (and missing) for most of the game. Thank goodness Lewis had a crazy game.

Nope. NCAA tries to protect top 4 seeds only geographically. They will most certainly be sent to one of the other four regions- any of the ones that don't lead to Houston, I would think.

Random factoid. Odds of winning first game...

    12th seed: 30%
    13th seed: 21%
    14th seed: 15%

You know something? That's actually better than I expected. There's a legit chance the Coogs aren't one and done. Sweet 16 chances are basically nil though.

Keep hearing Penders is retiring... then not retiring... ugh... thanks twitter-era reporting.

12 seeds upsetting five seeds happen all the time.

I think the reason that happens is because mid majors who are good always get that seed while undeserving big name schools who shouldn't be there get placed as a 5th seed.

Why are there still no highlights of this anywhere? Nothing on CBS (just a recap with announcers talking), nothing on ESPN, nothing on YouTube... hopefully this gets preserved somewhere :)

I was looking at Penders deal with some of the recaps of his prior teams. He seemed like a good coach before UH and a fair coach even at UH record-wise. What were the calls for his firing for this year... just not doing enough (until now you could argue) with a more talented squad?

Penders went from dead man walking to dancing in march. Maybe Joe Young and Brandon Peters can change their mind and sign with UofH

Well, if you look at the jump in odds

    16th seed: 0%
    15th seed: 4% (+4)
    14th seed: 15% (+11)
    13th seed: 21% (+6)
    12th seed: 31% (+10)
    11th seed: 31% (+0)
    10th seed: 38% (+7)
    9th seed: 50% (+13)

I don't really think 12 vs 5 really stands out, and a bit overrated. If anything, I'd say the more shocking thing is how well 14 plays 3. Probably because the automatically bids fill out the 15 and 16th seeds that are simply a notch below everyone else. Also surprised to see the big bump between 7 vs 10 and 8 vs 9.

Overall, I must say the tournament seedings are pretty well done.

Well, the Miners have had a horrible tendency to lose leads late in the second half this year, and it had lead to three of their five losses. In conference play that tendency stuck around, but we were good enough to still win those games, even though they should have been blowouts. But yesterday we did our patented second half choke-job, and UH grabbed hold of our throats and didn't let go. Congrats, Coogs, y'all earned the bid. Go win some games and represent CUSA well. I just hope we didn't choke our own bid away...

What interests me most is that the 12 seeds have actually been more successful than the 11 seeds. Also, in recent years, 9s actually have a better record vs the 8s than the other way around.

Essentially, when you get to 7-10, it's a toss up. Also, you start running into some good good mid-major teams at 12 seeds, or hot major teams that make runs in conference tourney.

Usually, you gotta get that champ right to win your pool. Beyond that, those 8-9 and 7-10 matchups can really make a difference in the end, too.
