Adding Schilling and A-Rod to the roster card (if rumors are to be believed, natch) significantly upgrades the team. That's a damn good team.

I *HATE* losing Nomah (he's by far my favorite player), but A-Rod is a pretty big uptick at short.

    Should be an interesting off-season...

Looks like Curt wants a contract extension in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause. That way if he's injury prone and sucks, he'll still get paid the big bucks.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1669959

Schilling is scheduled to make $12 million next season with the chance to earn almost $2 million more in performance bonuses, but he wants an extension before agreeing to a trade.

"I won't leave here without an extension," Schilling said. "I'm reading that I'm demanding three years. I've never demanded anything from anybody, but I will get a contract extension before I leave Arizona."

Schilling said Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and president Larry Lucchino were coming to Phoenix to meet with him. The Red Sox asked the commissioner's office for permission to discuss a contract extension with Schilling, the 37-year-old right-hander said, a window that expires at 5 p.m. Friday.

"I am going to meet with (Boston) on Wednesday," Schilling said. "Money is not going to be the key factor. I already have more money then I am ever going to spend. It will have to be right for me, my wife and family. The Red Sox have some positives, the Yankees have some positives, but we will see after I talk to them."

That is what I believe is what makes Schilling great - he studies batters and pitches to their weakness. He knows most batters and could cram for the AL teams they did face during the year. But I think switching leagues will give him some problems. It would still be a good pickup though.

Adding Schilling, ARod, and Foulke will be pretty amazing if it all gets done.

    We'll see I guess.

We'll it official. I hate the Yankees and i'm very happy to see the Red Sox make this deal.

Schilling Will Waive No Trade Clause

    By Jayson Stark
    ESPN.com

After three days of negotiations, the Red Sox and Curt Schilling have agreed to a deal on a two-year contract extension. Sources with knowledge of the negotiations say the deal will be announced later Friday night.

Schilling will then waive his no-trade clause and approve the four-for-one trade that the Red Sox and Diamondbacks agreed to Monday.

Schilling is signed for the 2004 season for $12 million. It's expected that his extension will be for two more guaranteed years (through 2006), with a vesting option that will guarantee a third season in 2007 if he stays healthy.

    How so?

I know you are a Yankee fan, but you have to admit, Pimp, that Theo Epstein knows what he is doing just like Brian Cashman.

Word is that he wants to sign Foulke, deal Nomar to Anaheim, and trade Manny to Texas for A-Rod.

Now to make all that fit, they will have to let go of some guys like Williamson, Byung-hyun Kim, Sauerbeck, Todd Walker, and most importantly Trot Nixon.

However, if they do get A-Rod along with Foulke to go with Pedro, then I have supreme confidence in Theo to find some gems like he did last season to surround those guys. I mean A-Rod, Pedro, Schilling, and Foulke is a damn good 4 to build around.

Besides you know that the Yankees will get Sheffield and Colon, so relax.;)

I have no clue about baseball and their players. What caliber player is Schilling if he would be a NBA player? Which player would he be if he would be an NBA player?

Considering his age, I'd consider him a top 30-40 player. Hmmm.....so, it would be like the Celtics adding Baron Davis? Cuttino? Abdur Rahim? Or, maybe Karl Malone? Although Schilling in his prime wasn't even close to Malone in his prime.

Even at Schilling's age,I'd consider him a potential top 5 starting pitcher, certainly a top 10......I think Schilling right now at his age is alot closer to the top SP's in baseball than Malone to the top PF's in basketball now.

    Palmray,

Your question is really a tough one to answer. The best I can do is tell you that adding Schilling to their pitching staff should improve their total wins by 10% (with the most it being almost 20%).

Now I arrived at that figure by taking 162 games and dividing by 5 (as we are assuming that the Red Sox are using a 5 man pitching staff). Rounding, 162 divided by 5 is 32. So, barring injuries and resting players, Schilling should have 32 starts for the Sox in 2004. Now, if the team wins every one of his starts, it does not necessarily mean that he would be 32-0. There would be some games in which he would leave with the score tied or losing, but the offense came back to win it for him and the bullpen picked him up. But, let's say that Boston wins 75% of his starts which would be 24 wins. Also, let's say that their #3 starter for the 2003 season only had the team win 50% of their starts or 16 games. So, that right there is 8 more wins.

But you have to also figure in intangible stuff like leadership and the presence in the clubhouse which are qualities that Schilling has.

Yes, he is old, but he is like Clemens in that he is durable and should be able to pitch until he is 40.

If you want to use a basketball analogy, take the Lakers. Shaq would be Pedro and Kobe would be Nomar. We'll say that Manny is Payton and adding Schilling is like adding Karl Malone. Unfortunately, unlike the NBA, MLB has 4 other guys that are out there all the time that teams rely on. But if this was a wiffleball team, it would be so kickass!

I'm not blaming the guy for making the move, he has to make a move for a guy like Schilling after the choke job they pulled in the ALCS. I just have a hunch that this is going to go all wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll see soon enough.

Ain't gonna happen. Texas made a big mistake giving A-Rod the franchise. I don't think they'd be that stupid twice and trade arguably the best player in baseball for one of the biggest headcases in baseball. A deal with Nomar and some of the other guys you mentioned could be a possibility, but then Foulke will no longer be an option because they won't have anything to offer. Texas isn't just going to give A-Rod away.

Yes, they would which, most likely with the other players you mentioned. If any of those were to go down, I believe it would hurt the Red Sox more than the help those guys[Schilling, (Foulke/A-Rod)] would provide. Again, just a hunch.

Possibly, but I don't expect anywhere near the same offensive production as last year, with or without those guys.

They may already have landed Sheffield.

    Pimp,

Don't be so sure about ARod and Foulke not coming to Boston. Hell, just a week ago, it looked like there was NO way that Schilling was coming to Boston, but it happened.

Don't tell Theo Epstein that anything is impossible because he will go out and prove you wrong just for saying it because that is the type of guy he is.

And guys like Kim, Sauerbeck, and Williamson hadn't played a full season with Boston yet anyway. Only Williamson had a significant role, so their departures are not going to be that big, compared to someone like Damon or Trot Nixon (who they might deal) or even Todd Walker.

But just like he showed with in obtaining Ortiz, Millar, and Mueller, Theo will find another gem or too at a reasonable price. And after this gem has a good season, we will hear how meglomaniac Steinbrenner had implored his people to get that guy.;)

I used to think that it must suck to be CarrotTop over anyone else in the world, but I have changed my mind. It must suck to be Brian Cashman more than anyone else. No matter how well you do your job, there is no pleasing the Boss, lol.

Nice joke, but c'mon. For every person that says they wouldn't want to be the GM of the Yankees, there is someone else that would jump at the chance, possibly even a Theo(lifelong Red Sox fan that was born in New York)Epstien in his pre-Red Sox GM days.

Take off the Yankee blinders. Uh, Steinbrenner is really that bad of a person to work for or did you think he's like he is portrayed on "Seinfeld"?

Yep... watched the local news last night, the fans were pretty excited. There was this one fan though, and you can tell he's a true fan because he was so jaded he was like : "let's just see how it goes, it's not like the man can walk on water." haha.

Yo Manny, do you think that Kim has pissed off the fans with the finger and the other antics? Also, I have to say Kurt Schilling is MUCH better than Derek Lowe, who was exposed last season.
