I seriously do not understand the anger the WNBA seems to engender. If you don't want to watch them, you don't have to, but why do so many people hate that league so much? I just don't get it.
Also maybe allow fights like Hockey. Maybe have strip bball... where you have to take a piece of your uniform off per 10 pts that your opponent scores.
Wouldn't describe it as hate, most of it is just piling on with your typical sexist remarks from male wankers. Spoiler great ass pic btw
I don't care, but I think a lot of guys think it's unfair that an enterprise that can't self sustain gets legitimized by its name. It's like constantly promoting a tv show that doesn't get enough viewership to justify its existence. Guys just get annoyed at seeing the ads and sometimes the annoyance turns into hate.
I'm more knocking on the marketing campaign than the WNBA. I just think it's idiotic beyond belief, and can't believe people are getting paid to roll that kind of stuff out.
Dude, first thing that I thought in my head too haha. WNBA and Tyler Perry's House of Payne, WELCOME TO HELL!
First time I saw those commercials, I couldn't believe it. I thought it was some kind of joke. Like one of those fake SNL commercials. I thought advertising agencies were supposed to come up with ads that make the product look good, not make fun of it. Seriously the worst ad campaign for ANY product I have EVER seen. I don't think I could have done any worse if I tried.
Wow, did I kill a lot of perfectly good brain cells reading this thread. Back to the original topic, the idea of the campaign is the fight those stereotypes that is in the ads. You people are going to say it anyway, but seeing them "say it" obviously got your attention.
I went on a mini-rant about this in the thread about the new rookie from TN that plays for LA. This ad-campaign angers me every time it comes on TV. There hasn't been a time I've seen one of the ads and screamed "YES, I SAY THAT ALL THE TIME!" I need to stop, because I get legitimately angered.
I think the ads are a terrible idea too. I didn't realize what the point was, because after the first 2 or three statements I've already diverted my attention. It would probably be better if after each statement, they interject a quick edit to a game highlight contradicting it. Next stereotypical statement, another contradicting highlight, etc.
Well did you actually watch Candace Parker (of whom you were referring in talking about "that rookie from TN that plays for LA) in her WNBA premiere or did you just watch the commercials and complain? I am going to be honest, I only watched part of it. I wasn't able to watch the whole game because I had things to do on Saturday afternoon, but I think she's one of the best things to come along for the WNBA. She's highly marketable, sort of a LeBron for the WNBA. Obviously it's not the same as watching the NBA, or men's college basketball, but it's still entertaining and it's still basketball. Like Shane said, "It's still basketball. It's still trying to get a little orange ball through a metal hoop." You should work for the marketing department!!
I wouldn't hate the WNBA if their commercials weren't jammed down my throat during NBA games. WNBA "All-Stars" should not be competing during NBA All-Star Saturday Night. The NBA is too arrogant to see it as a bad investment and cut its losses.
Then why don't they have a commercial for KFC saying, "Only black people eat fried chicken" or a commercial for a Chinese automobile manufacturer that says "Asians are poor drivers" ? It doesn't seem to be fighting anything but calling them to attention. It promotes a non-pc stereotype. That's why people think its dumb. I personally don't give a crap, but when you're dealing with the pc police, it's a whole different story. I don't watch the WNBA because it is not entertaining to me. I don't care who supports it and keeps it in existence. I don't watch Nascar, soccer, hockey, bowling, water polo, polo, jai alai, lacrosse, table tennis, tennis, track & field, or curling either. That doesn't mean there is no market for it, I just think it's not fun to watch.
The league should openly market to the one demographic who currently supports and has the disposable income to support the league: the gay and lesbian community. Not an insignificant percentage of the players are gay or bisexual and the games are family friendly. If the league openly markets to the community, more gay parents will feel welcome and bring their kids to the games.
