Nah, can't hate a band for having one turd in their discography. However, that reminds me - I hate all the punk/ska bands who sound like b*stard progeny of the Specials and Rancid (who is equally wretched).
The Specials were just rip-off artists. Madness was the real deal. But you're right, there is something about suburban white kids playing ska that just annoys me.
Because most of them play generic music that's really safe and boring. I don't think that merits hate, but I definitely find popular music to generally be pretty crappy. The only bands I usually hate are one's where I have problems with the way band members act...not just because I don't like their music. Most of the popular rock bands nowadays just bore me, but I doubt they're bad guys.
I agree they shouldn't be considered rock at all, but it's not their fault some jackass made that quote. And what's wrong with bubblegum/happy music? Is it a rule that music must be negative and dreary to be considered good?
You are entitled to like them, but having 30 people in the band is also annoying when the product they turn out is the Polyphonic Spree music. It just adds to the annoyance factor. I can't go see them live, or violence would ensue.
I like plenty of happy music, but trying to relieve and recreate the 'Age of Aquarius' sound isn't original nor was it of quality the first time around. I don't mind a genuine happiness and good feeling to music. I do mind a self manufactured pumped up psuedo happiness that they are trying to spread.
It just depends on how you look at it. I see it as being influenced by the Flaming Lips, while you see it as "ripping-off." 90% of the bands I like were strongly influenced by bands that came before them. 100% of them were at least slightly influenced by other bands. As far as not liking them because they come across as too gimmicky...I'll buy that.
The sad thing is that I like the Flaming Lips, and the Flaming Lips have some genuine humor with the material. Sometimes it was too silly, but the ... Pink Robots stuff was really top notch.
Coming off Tripping Daisy the change was obvious to me. FL has a uniquie original sound and style. Spree is cashing in on it.
Love the snob, hate the snobbery? subtomic, did I read correctly that you hate or once hated STYX. That is a big, big problem. I used to be a total music snob, worked for years at KTRU, blah blah blah. Then a miracle happened. I decided it would be funny if I convinced people that I really liked Madonna. I started listening to her albums in lab all the time as my own stupid joke. But the miracle for me was that I started to really enjoy the music. Now I can even listen to techno in small doses. Praise be!
I knew someone who used to work there then heard a horrible story about him. Supposedly he committed some crime. His was called Roo. Anyway I don't want to get into specifics because nothing was proven the last I heard. This was about 10 years ago. I'm curious, do you know any info on this. I always liked the guy. My band was on his show a couple of times, and he was always really nice, and good to talk to about music.
Indeed I do. I made the mistake of listening to The Grand Illusion while writing a paper. I got an F. Coicidence? I think not. Plus, I'm scared of the lead guitar player's outfit and hair in the video for 'Too Much Time on My Hands.' Seriously, if I wanted to listen to bad Broadway rock, I'd go buy a recording of Jesus Christ Superstar. Styx needs to return to the hell that they came from (pun fully intended). Anyone who admits to a fondness for Madonna's music has bigger problems that my musical tastes.
ouch, man. i could qualify as a suburban white kid playing ska, since playing ska music is my life. i dont think theres anything wrong with people playing the music they love, no matter what race they are.
