I am curious if the opening is supposed to be set in China as there is a panda and the workers look sort of like the way the Simpsons draw Asians. Didn't the Simpson do a joke about Korean animators, who do most of the animation work, in the episode about the Itchy and Scratchy movie?
i honestly think it was on its last leg after O'brein left to do the late show. i loved the one episode where bart prankcalls moe for that one babysitter chick he liked (sara gilbert? me thinks). anyways moe come running from the bar to barts hose and threatns to murder jimbo. the fear in jimbo was hilarious. dunno, just kinda brought back good memories
I have hardly watched the Simpsons since the episode where Milhouse's parents got divorced. I did not laugh once the whole episode. I have maybe seen 4 shows since then. That had to be around 8 years ago.
It got canceled before that. At the time, that was the only steady work she had though, it seemed her career had been floundering a bit the year or 2 before she died. King of the Hill was pretty damned good. Since it took a more realistic approach, it always stood out differently from The Simpsons and Family Guy. There were a lot of good people working on that show, people who had been part of the best years of the Simpsons. Greg Daniels, one of the better Simpsons writers was the co creator/show runner. He also co-created The Office and Parks and Recreation. One of the things King of the Hill did better than the other shows was the way they used guest stars. Look up Brad Pitt as Boomhauer's brother or Johnny Depp as a Yoga instructor who helps Hank with a bad back.
i loved the episode where hank becomes a pimp and punks the other pimp in the end (which was snoop dogg)
He's not wrong. Simpsons hasn't been good for 15 years. South Park stopped being good once they started taking itself seriously.. now every episode might as well be tagged "a very special episode" like some 80s sitcom delivering very very important messages. You'd think that it can't be hard to think of 20 minutes of boob jokes but even Family Guy has noticeably deteriorated now that Seth has gone Hollywood. KOTH was always pretty good, never great but the quality was consistent its entire run. KOTH also had superlative voice talent. Pamela Adlon who voiced Bobby Hill (and who plays Louie CK's love interest in Louie now) and Kathy Najimy who did Peggy, along with obviously Brittany Murphy who you all mentioned. If you just listen to the voice characterization it's like you're listening to one of those old radio serials. Just really high quality work. Of course the best thing about KOTH was Mike Judge, who is an underrated genius with Beavis and Butthead, Office Space and Idiocracy in addition to KOTH. As for Banksy, Simpsons is drawn in Korea by artists who like American animators are serious about their work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k66MUSNlBJM&feature=player_embedded not in China by soulless zombies. The same people who draw the Simpsons animated the landmark Pink Panther and Transformer series, and designed Luke Skywalker's light sabre. I know it's not that serious but the sequence is a slap in the face of artists who do the work on the show basically because we have assumptions about them based on their geographic origin *which we can't even get straight*
A lot of countries have pandas, in zoos. Anyway there is a dolphin head and a unicorn so I am not sure if the Panda was meant to symbolize it was set in China or if it was just meant to add to the overall dark humor of the intro.
That was pretty tragic. I agree. In many ways it was more realistic than a lot of live action sitcoms. One thing that I liked about KOTH was the relationship between Hank and Khan and their families. Both started out as stereotypes but were very complex characters who had a very complex relationship. Even though Khan was a cartoon character voiced by a white guy in many ways he was the most realistic Asian character on mainstream TV for the time.
I think the Simpsons did a better job with its guest stars in the beginning. Then at some point, the show became more about seeing how many guest stars they could squeeze into each season than about actually writing good episodes.
For some reason, I've always felt like the Sea Captain (Captain McAllister) was always one of the most underrated characters on the show. Even though he only had like 2 lines in every 2 or 3 episodes, they were ALWAYS comedic gold. McAllister: I'll need three ships and fifty stout men. We'll sail 'round the Horn and return with spices and silk, the likes of which ye have never seen! Burns: We're building a casino! McAllister: Arrrr...can you give me five minutes???
Conan only wrote for the show for about 2 seasons (seasons 4 and 5 if I'm not mistaken) and they were good. However, the show had arguably their best seasons after that. Seasons 5, 6 and 7... all comedic gold. It started going downhill after season 8, IMO.
