Basically the academy doesn't want him showing up at the red carpet as The Dictator.

    Sacha's response.

    It's FILM.

Transformers is a movie... The Artist is a masterpiece... A truly great work of art that should be respected as such. I can think of several films that have changed the perception of the world, of how people think.

“Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show,”

I think they're safe. Good to know they have goals.

nice promotion use of the academy. He could have just showed up as his character but by having asked he knew it would make a headline.

I suppose showing up in character/costume for your movie is somewhat pretentious ... unless it is Sasha Cohen...then it's funny.

I mean, imagine if Forrest Whitaker took his Oscar dressed as General Idi Amin... or Johnny Depp showed up in custome when nominated: Sweeney Todd...lol. Or Russell Crowe for Gladiator. Daniel Day Lewis for Gangs of New York. It would become silly.

I mean even Michael Jackson was in his Sunday best...when he went with Madonna. Of course, she probably threated to ban his tickets, too, if he dressed like a the Prince of the Creepy.

You can 'pretend' the best! Here's your award! Now let's talk about your delicate genius and being god's gift to humanity.

It's all just entertainment, get over it.

I side with the Academy. Its a professional event. There should be unspoken rules. And if he was to dress crazy in general -- fair enough. But if he came in that particular outfit he would just be plugging his movie. The event is about celebrating the profession, not promoting new movies.

Nothing will ever top Borat. He should have showed up as Borat a few years ago.
