Sheen's winning 'works' because you only get to see the edited, bite sized nuggets of gold from his interviews and antics, 5 minutes of warlock action out of a whole day of rambling. I don't know why people thought he could fill up a whole show by just showing up and being himself. He wasn't going to screw his goddesses, do drugs, or get grilled by an antagonistic interviewer on stage so there isn't much stimuli there.
It's obvious that Sheen pulled an Andy Kaufman on everyone, but he's surrounded by fools and trolls so he's not understood in his own time. It's a shame that most won't understand the comedic genius of Carlos Estevez until he's gone in a few years.
Actually, he surrounds HIMSELF with fools and trolls- the rest of us know exactly who he is, a marginal talent doing things that, quite frankly, the rich have been doing for years. Comparing Sheen to a true original talent like Andy Kaufman is like comparing....well, it's just dumb, no need for comparison. There's a difference between people booing you because you're weirdly creative/strange and people doing so because they realize you don't bring much to the table. Sheen brings very little- he thought a hedonistic lifestyle and coining a few original phrases would lead to an initial groundswell of support. He was right. He also think it's sustainable beyond the next day's E! headlines. He's wrong. People don't boo Billy Joel in concert. They don't walk out in the middle of movies featuring Robert DeNiro unless the rest is so unbelievably bad that even his great acting can't save it. They don't leave in the middle of an Aziz Anzari stand-up performance (at least, I don't think they do- I could be wrong about him- OK, George Carlin or Robin Williams are other good examples). You might be able to fool people once, but they'll usually wise up, which the Detroit audience did quite rapidly. The most pathetic comment? A Charlie Sheen fan standing in line saying, "I missed Woodstock, so I didn't want to miss this." Someone is LOSING and my prediction is that by the time others start walking out in the middle of his shows, the remaining audience will be about 2 and a half attendees.
William Shatner did his own tour once where he narrated over whale sounds with visuals. I saw it at The Summit and it was nice. Charlie couldn't write a coherent essay in English Literature 101. First mistake was touring on the back of an incoherent babble show. People need a coherent presentation even if the topic is non-sense. As figured, he looks funny when being interviewed on TV and spewing out dribble but seeing it in person is an entirely different story as the crowd found out. It's really a show about stupid America paying with the expectation of being entertained by an actor without a true production. If you paid and went expecting/knowing it wasn't going to be good, then you are even stupider. It's a show about and for the stupid.
OK, as much as I think this whole thing is a joke, I have to admit that this is pretty funny on what he did tonight at the Chicago show: 8:25 PM -- Charlie just read a poem about how much he hates Detroit. I have to give him credit for having the guts on that one.
He should be doing Charlie Sheen's TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORIES <table style='font:11px arial; color:#333; background-color:#f5f5f5' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='512' height='340'><tbody><tr style='background-color:#e5e5e5' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/chappelles_show/index.jhtml'>Chappelles Show</a></td><td style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; text-align:right; font-weight:bold;'></td></tr><tr style='height:14px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;' colspan='2'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=11909&title=true-hollywood-stories-rick'>True Hollywood Stories - Rick James Pt. 1</a></td></tr><tr style='height:14px; background-color:#353535' valign='middle'><td colspan='2' style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; width:512px; overflow:hidden; text-align:right'><a target='_blank' style='color:#96deff; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.comedycentral.com/'>www.comedycentral.com</a></td></tr><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><embed style='display:block' src='http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:11909' width='512' height='288' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='window' allowFullscreen='true' flashvars='autoPlay=false' allowscriptaccess='always' allownetworking='all' bgcolor='#000000'></embed></td></tr><tr style='height:18px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><table style='margin:0px; text-align:center' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='100%' height='100%'><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://shop.comedycentral.com/?v=comedy-central_shows_chappelles-show&SESSID=870783e1901f9dd5c2769413fc45aa24'>Buy Chappelle's Show DVDs</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/chappelles_show/videos/index.jhtml'>Black Comedy</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?videoId=11909&title=hes-rick-james'>True Hollywood Story</a></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table> Rocket River
I saw Huntesr S Thompson live so I know something about incoherent ramblings mixed with brilliance... And Chatlie has never been close to brillant.
As expected, it looks like someone realized Sheen needs to go back to the only thing that 'works' - Sheen Being Interviewed. Sounds like they changed the format completely, so at least the second show wasn't a train wreck. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/charlie-sheen-receives-standing-ovation-174229
professorjay nailed it - Sheen's ramblings and musings look a lot funnier when they are in print and people have time to read them over and over and think about what he is saying or trying to say. Translating that over to a live show is not going to have the same effect. I tried watching his interview on dateline awhile back and lost interest within 10 minutes, lol.
People are so stupid. I want to pay to watch a live sit down interview with Charlie Sheen on stuff he already said on TV? Why not just do "Inside the Actor's Studio" then? That would be more interesting probably. You could probably count on one hand the new information gleemed from this expensive interview. And, who really cares? The best way to get that information is if Charlie wrote his memoirs like Nikki Six or one of those guys. But, if you want to get that type of information, then you are better off reading books from Nikki or Tommy Lee in the first place. Their stories are likely a hundred times more interesting than Charlie's embellished bullcrap. Yea...they all gave him a standing ovation to save face that they got duped out of their money for a repeat interview they have already seen.
This Charlie Sheen stuff was interesting before it was totally obvious he was playing up the crazy persona for attention/money.
I kind of called it. The interview format gives him more chances to give some sound bite gems. Having him just go on stage aimlessly seems like a sparring match with no opponent. But the problem is he (apparently) isn't open enough to answer some questions. We already heard his many TV and print interviews. You need to bring more. Get those 'goddesses' to do more participation for one. With their mouths. Talking...and some other stuff.
