I don't think there's a right or wrong way to spell it. It originated as a verbal nickname, so in reality, it had no spelling at its creation. Since it is a play on his name, then 'Dalgy' would seem appropriate, but if you're going by sheer pronunciation, then 'Doggie' would be right. If you're correcting folks for spelling 'Jimy' with two m's, then you have a leg to stand on. If you're correcting folks for 'Dalgy', is there really a reliable standard?
Considering his teammates, Dierker, announcers and reporters refer to him as 'Doggy' I suspect the only way to spell it is 'Doggy' or 'Doggie'.
They don't play "Who let the Dalgs out" whenever Doggy bats. His nickname is Doggy, not Dalgy. They also don't play "Who let the Doggies out", although that would be quite funny. If the nickname came from his name, then which fits better: Hidalgo Doggy Dalgy Why does he have a nickname anyway? Why not call him Hidalgo?
Nicknames don't always come from your original name. There is no "Doctor" in Julius Erving. There is no Admiral in David Robinson. There is no Dream in Hakeem Olajuwon. There is no Sir in Charles Barkley. There is no Jet in Kenny Smith. So on and so forth. The first part of his name sounds like Doggy, hence the playing of that song pretty much ever since he's been with the Astros. Dog and Doggy are pretty much the same thing. Nitkowski pronounced it wrong too. Just because he's a journeyman pitcher with a crappy website who happened to be teammates with him for a year doesn't make him an authority. I'll take Dierker, Jimy, Milo, whoever the hell picks the music during at-bats, etc. over him.
not to spoil a riveting discussion on the merits of various Richard Hidalgo references, but. . . was Maddux even that great this past season? it seems like I remember him getting off to a really slow start.

Dr. J and Hakeem the Dream are very much plays on their name that's similar to Doggy/Hidalgo, especially the Olajuwon example.

this is hysterical. y'all play nice. argue about something worth arguing about, like whether Mack Brown's nickname should be "Suckballs".
like whether Mack Brown's nickname should be "Suckballs". See, this would be a quality, appropriate nickname, as Mack Brown does in fact suck balls. Hidalgo, as much as I am not a fan, is still not a doggy.
I just hope the Cubs don't get Greg Mad Dalg Maddux. I wouldn't mind them getting Greg Mad Dalg Davis to coordinate their offense, though.
I wish the would. The Cubs would have a killer rotation with Maddux, they also have a killer rotation without him.
