Ming mentioned this guy in his diaries twice. Because Ming is dominated at the inside, almost all the centers began to stay at the outside and threw the three. So Ming was looking forward to meeting Garth at the court. At the end of regular season, Ming said his rebound was the same with Garth and his block was much better than Garth.

    01/02/2002
    Shanghai sharks vs Shanxi :98:88
    Yao Ming: 24 minutes, 23 points, 9/11, 81.8%, 5/6 83.3%, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks

    Garth: 43.5 mintues, 42 points, 17/27 63%, 8/12 66.7%, 22 rebounds and 9 dunks, 2 blocks

First half: Shanghai Sharks led 31 points. So Ming rest at the second half.

    02/24/02
    Shanxi :Shanghia Sharks: 96:106

    Yao Ming:48 minutes, 24 points, 7/17 41.2%, three point 1/2 50% , FT 7/9 77.8%, 22 rebounds, 4 dunks, 4 blocks,4 assists

    Garth:36 minutes, 25 points, 10/18 55.6%, FT: 5/10 50%, 22 rebounds, 5 dunks, 2 blocks, 1 assist.

    Garth's team lost both games.

7'2" 306? with a lot of bball experience. How many 19-20 year olds could he NOT dominate in the paint?

At the end of regular season: Yao Ming block 117, Garth is the second place: 47. Who said that Ming is not a shot-blocker?

That's right TexasG, and ah what do you know, Donnie likes Ming! OOOPS! And "The Nellie" wouldn't know defense if it bit him on the @ss. As for Cuban finding a "Ming-Killer", he needs to find a Webber-killer because he absolutely abused that "frontline" of Dallas'. And I don't think it taints Ming's numbers at all. People forget, guys like Dirk, and Peja, and Shrempf played in similar leagues with Americans putting up big numbers, and they did fine in the NBA.

Interesting scoops about this Garth guy. Tells you again that guys who are not suited for the NBA may excell in other leagues, and guys who have shown nothing in other leagues may find a job in the NBA on potential alone. I can see how a big, slow guy like Garth could dominate a slower and less athletic league like CBA. Or how a great guy at the NCAA-level like Juan Dixon may have problems in the NBA just because of size. At the same time a guy like Tskitishvili who was a reserve in Euro goes 5th and a guy like Wilcox who was a 6th man earlier in the year at maryland goes 8th.

A lot of mis-informed, delusional writers in the US who think Yao is doomed to fail because he is not a shot blocker...

Yao is only 21 guys, he will only improve. Imagine if Yao had stay in CBA for another year? He would be pulling scoring averages of more than 40 (he did that in this year's play-offs already) and taking more than 20 boards at will.

Yao is already at much better rebounder and shot blocker than Wang Zhi Zhi is, by a long way.

    -G'day-

I have to admit that it concerns me that a guy like Garth Joseph can average almost the same numbers as Ming.

Garth is big and slow but still very big. He is even big for the NBA which is why he gets so many invitations to camp. But he is too slow and has too little skill for the NBA. In the CBA however where the game is a little slower and smaller, he can dominate because no one is there who can out muscle him. Ming on the other hand scores the same points, but its how he does it. Ming has other offensive moves other than dunks that I don't think anyone including nba players can defend like a sky hook and a turnaround fadeaway.

Its kinda like that playground guy that lit Francis, Cat, and Walt up for 50+ points during a summer league. Although he score on an all-star pg doesn't mean he would be successful in the NBA. He wouldn't be able score like that in the NBA.

juan dixon put up similar numbers to jay williams but chicago wasn't about to take dixon 2nd. it's all about how their skills translate to the next level. garth is able to body up guys in the cba but is way to slow at this level. ming on the other hand has legit skills and speed. there should be no cause for concern.

I don't mind Cuban. I enjoy his interviews but I definitely don't agree with him.

I have said this before and I am saying it again. If Shaq play in a league of 10 years old, he can average 150 points and 60 rebounds/game. Not more than that coz he will only get the damn ball so many times a game. But wait, I can also average 135 points and 50 rebounds /game...

    22 rebounds for Garth?

Is it me, or can any big guy get 20 rebounds a game in China? How many rebounds could collier get over there?

Very good points. I would also add that this:

If Hakeem in his prime went to the CBA he would average about the same as Garth Joseph. What made Hakeem great was not how good he was against lesser competetion, but how good he was against the highest competetion. Hakeem would have the same numbers against the Admiral as he would against Benoit Benjamin. The better the competetion the better he was. I even remember some times when left unguarded he would miss, he was getting his rythm from the contact with the defender. That's why Hakeem never played well in the All-Star game where there is no defense played. Hakeem was the worst garbage-time player ever and the best crunch-time player ever.

It seems that Garth is to the CBA what Shaq is to the NBA. A big hulking monster of a guy. He was on the Raptors roster two years ago and became a locker room favorite with his surprising gentleness off the court and his island accent and humor. Oakley absolutely loved him. He was traded to Denver as part of the Clark and Willis trade, I believe.

Wow...those stats of Garth Joseph makes me wonder if 2 Sandwiches could put up similar numbers if he went to the CBA...

    Hey Cuban:

ya, we all think you are cute and really rich, but shut your freakin pie hole, because it will come back to haunt you for sure!

You have zero crediblity....You have freakin 10 coaches, 25 players, a new arena, 1 billion dollars in the bank--ooops after paying for 25 players and 10 coaches and the new arena and the topless bar hops in Vegas, the losses on the enron and worldcom stock, make that 700 million and you still cannot even make it to finals!!!

Actually it's closer to 3 Billion. And last I checked the Mavs are by far a better team than the Rockets.

And last I checked the Rockets had championships, and the Mavs sucked for a decade, and now are sacrificial lambs in the playoffs. Look I know you're a Mavericks fan and you're having trouble handling success, but come brag to Rockets and Spurs fans when you, you know, actually get out of the 2nd round? Until then, you're still the b*stard child of Texas in the NBA.
