If anything its another country to benefit from with mutual trade.
Besides, its not a good idea to make enemies with a country so geographically close to ours.

Cubans are a big voting block in Florida.

Florida is a big swing state.

Not going to happen, maybe in the 2nd term at the very end, but not right now.

I just got back from visiting Cuba two weeks ago (US citizen, traveled through Mexico).

    Fascinating people, history, and culture.

    This is long overdue.

For anyone that's interested, here are some photos I took while in Cuba.

Hopefully Obama will open talks in December, win or lose in November. (Not that I expect him to lose.)

Castro came in, jacked up the price of sugar cane & terms & conditions on the US corps in the late 50's, US Corps say screw you, Castro says no screw you, get out. Nixon had an agreement to invade Cuba with big corporate interests at stake for their cane when elected in 1960. JFK gets elected instead. Corps still want to invade, JFK not aware, Bay of Pigs disaster. Pissed off at CIA and their covert false flag invasion, Cuba decides it's cool for USSR to put nukes 90 miles off florida. Public relations disaster. Corps substitute corn.

Always about big $$, natural resources and corporate interests though housing nukes in CUBA during middle of cold war not exactly a smart strategic move on their part for relations.

Let's not totally point the finger at the Cubans. We had missiles in Turkey and Greece at the time, pretty close to the Soviet Union.

Yeah, they tried to exercise a bit of self-determination and we reacted poorly in defense of our interests, then they reacted poorly in response, and now they are screwed and we have high fructose corn syrup.

History of sugar trade in Cuba:
    http://www.historyofcuba.com/history/havana/Sugar1.htm

I think Castro just wanted his people better taken care of instead of used & abused. If you read through that link, you'll see that Cuba has a history of being exploited for its sugar. Castro just decided to stand up to them and it led to banishment essentially. Of course, publicly this came with a lot of spin and untruths. & Yes, corps eventually figured out corn syrup could suffice and now we're all fat & have diabetes.

Pretty much. Cuba was giant plantation for American corporations for sometime until the revolution.

Hell Hawaii was the same way too. It was also filled with American run sugar plantations until the Native Hawaiian monarchy tried to take back power from American business and the American diplomatic community in Hawaii. Only in their case, the revolution failed and America basically took control and eventually annexed the country.

Sugar has been the driving force of American foreign policy for generations. It's also the reason why sugar is now relatively expensive in this country because the now dominant corn lobby maintains heavy tariffs on sugar imports today.

In short, sugar has ****ed up the Western Hemisphere in a very powerful way.
