On board these particular flights were ICE agents and migrant children (approximately four to eleven years old) who had been separated from their families and were being flown to a "relocation" site. Since working the two flights, the images of those helpless children have burned into my psyche. I can't help but think about their journey to their makeshift "homes" which, historically speaking reminds one of another group of people who were forced out of their homes and relocated to ghettos. As a result of what I witnessed, I have made a decision that if I'm ever assigned to a flight with children who've been separated from their families, I will immediately remove myself from the trip due to the nature of this unconscionable act by my government and my employer's complicity. Since sharing my story, I learned from a fellow flight attendant that he was lied to by an ICE agent who said the children on the flight were part of a soccer team. When pressed, the agent finally admitted that they were, indeed children who were being relocated to assigned camps. I think you're right. I think there is a more complex set of drivers because I don't think people generally pick up and go to foreign lands when life at home is peachy. But, given our track record over the last half-century, would-be immigrants know that (1) Americans and unwilling and/or unable to enforce their immigration laws and (2) we have a few times in the past relented on the persecution of illegals because we'd let the problem get too big. It is pretty reasonable for the would-be immigrant to assume that they'll be able to get in and likely stay if they keep their head down and that somewhere down the road there will be relief for their children, and if nothing else the American authorities might neglect or mistreat you but they probably won't torture you or murder you. If you see that and your prospects at home are miserable and dangerous, yeah you might take the risk. I suppose it wasn't a long drive for Obama to get over to Virginia from DC. But given that there is this potential for abuse at detention centers, we should be seeking to absolutely minimize their use. Trump has attacked sanctuary city policies, giving illegals a well-founded fear of reporting crimes against them to the police. Perps know this, and can use this vulnerability to exploit illegals, as this guy did. When the sanctuary city debate was raging, this outcome was obvious to anyone with half a brain. I'm not at all surprised by this story and I'm sure there are thousands more just like it that I'll never hear about. Local police should not be used to enforce immigration policy. It fundamentally undermines their mission. I think the next step is reuniting separated families asap. We should not deport any adult without first re-uniting them with the children they came with. Neither should we be detaining those adults as we "look" for their children. That would be a formula for indefinite detention. Let the parent go catch & release style until you've located their kids. You won't need to worry about them not showing up when you call because they'll want to be able to pick up their kids. If they're to be deported, you can deport them at that time.
