Nope. Child abuse because it's been attested by many experts in child development that trauma like this can lead to negative long term outcomes for the children. Mass child separation because, like mass incarceration, it is it is a government policy to apply a factory-like efficiency to the process of separating families on a large scale (for the expressed purpose of deterring such families from applying for asylum or jumping the border). You neglected to mention my profligate use of the term concentration camp, which I use because these are secured detention centers for a specific class of people (suspected illegal immigrants) in which those people (children in this case) are being detained before any due process and without even access to bail. I'm not an ostentatious person. I'm not picking these words as hyperbole. I'm calling a spade a spade. It might be tempting for some people to shield themselves from the reality of what's going on here with soothing ideas of "they're treated well", "bet they didn't have air conditioning and cable TV back in Honduras", "they chose this" or whatever. So we need to be honest and specific about the implications here -- the Trump Admin is doing real damage to many people in order to win more of their policy objectives in the coming legislative compromise. I'll be calm when the Admin changes its practice. Until then, I'll be content to heap derision on Trump and anyone abetting him in this effort.
McClatchy: Officials likely lost track of thousands more unaccompanied migrant children than reported http://thehill.com/latino/393052-mc...track-of-thousands-more-unaccompanied-migrant
This whole thing is pretty goofy. If people know their coming in illegally and their children will be separated from them and they come in ANYWAY then don’t complain. I have so many friends waiting to get into the US legally after applying and working and waiting years. Then people just show up and expect us to take care of them? They put their children in this position. If you don’t want to be separated from your children don’t do something ILLEGAL. And don’t force your children to do something ILLEGAL. This stuffs been going on for years. It’s just the media trying to make another problem for Trump before elections. Don’t be herded like sheep about the latest uproar nonsense.
My only quibble with a very fine post, @JuanValdez, is that you're suggesting their only aim is legislative. I think members of the administration (Miller, for one) would like to see something like this as semi-permanent, as a public deterrent to immigration in general (illegal or otherwise) and to further feed their build-the-wall white voter base. So now that former federal prosecutors, the UN, business leaders, child psychologists, a sitting TX senator and many TX reps, and countless others have come out against the new policy (or new interpretation of old law, if you apologists prefer)... just trying to keep score here: pretty much anyone who knows anything of relevance or has any immediate rooting interest in this protocol is against it. Who would have thought a sociopath like S. Miller could lead a good old boy like J. Sessions so far astray? I guess you never really know anyone... unless you take their words, their history, and their actions as indicative.
Totally agree. Big if. And it's "they're", FWIW. So nearly all publications, with a variety of reporters from across the spectrum are all dreaming up nonsense, and a bunch of Republican politicians, including a bunch of Republicans in Texas, are all "sheep"? But, you, Fox and Friends, and 45 are the only purveyors of truth? I'm sorry. Occam's Razor just won't let a non-brainwashed person go there with you.
There is a level of dishonesty about virtually everything re: trump's administration and agencies it seems...
Very interesting, but everyone should note that he did his collecting from 2007-2014: none of those items are recent.
Do a cost/benefit analysis on this one, conservatives. Essentially no tangible benefit except satisfying your personal feelings on crime and punishment in exchange for a huge PR nightmare. I get that you hardcore guys don't see anything wrong here, but you have to see by now that literally everybody else in the world reacts strongly and viscerally against it Deal with the world as it is, not as you think it should be. You are pissing away capital on punishment that would otherwise be spent on enforcing immigration laws. what's more important? punishing illegal immigrants fully when you catch them, or blocking them from coming in the first place? you are going to war for the former at expense of the latter. it's counterproductive.
Your first paragraph says it all. To rip off forum thread topics: scorched earth >>>> kid gloves. This is a dat gun invasion son! We turning into a third world country. Not on my watch!!!
Not sure if migrants are complaining. In fact, some had said faced with violence at home vs escape (migrants seeking asylum) and knowing family could be separated, they take the risk of separation. I think we can understand how desperate they are to make that choice. Family separation has been going on occasionally, but never as a policy. Catch and release was the “policy” which means the family are let go intact and together, and to be processed through the court as a family unit (... I get the concern with this policy...) Mass separation of family due to zero tolerance is the new policy replacing catch and release. While these families have no good choice and they will have to live with their decisions, we do have a choice and we, both as a country and as individual also must live with our choice.
