This isn't anywhere near as bad as the monkey brains but I used to have a korean room mate who once when we went on a trip to Greece swam down on the beach with a fork and knife, came up with a sea urchin, cracked it open and ate it while swimming. He did this about eight times before he was full.

Needless to say, he got laid that night.

No, I draw the line with live cows.

To be honest, I would never try a sack from any specie.

Did you eat it? Or were you watching someone else's being prepared?

I'm just curious if it is all about presentation or if it tastes different.

And for the vegetarians in the crowd:

Carrot Juice is Murder by the Arrogant Worms

Listen up brothers and sisters come hear my desperate tale
I speak of our friends of nature trapped in the dirt like a jail
Vegetables live in oppression, served on our tables each night
This killing of veggies is madness, I say we take up the fight
Salads are only for murderers, coleslaw's a fascist regime
Don't think that they don't have feelings, just cause a radish can't scream

    Chorus:
I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream, scream, scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (having their insides revealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (burning off calories)
How do you think that feels (bet it hurts really bad)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (and that's a real crime)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (let my vegetables go)
It's time to stop all this gardening (it's dirty as hell)
Let's call a spade a spade (is a spade is a spade is a spade)

I saw a man eating celery, so I beat him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again, I'll bite him clean in two
I'm a political prisoner, trapped in a windowless cage
Cause I stopped the slaughter of turnips by killing five men in a rage
I told the judge when he sentenced me, "This is my finest hour,
I'd kill those farmers again just to save one more cauliflower"

    Chorus

How low as people do we dare to stoop,
Making young broccolis bleed in the soup?
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes
Let potted plants free, don't mash that potato!
Oh spare the spud! Eat a cow instead!

I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream, scream, scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (fates in the stir-fry are sealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (you fat gourmet slob)
How do you think that feels? (leave them out in the field)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (V8's genocide)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (yes, your composts are graves)
It's time to stop all this gardening (take up macrame)
    Let's call a spade a spade
(is a spade, is a spade, is a spade, is a spade......)

Power to the peas! Give peas a chance!
all we are saying, is give peas a chance

That is the funny thing DR, I mean how can fish taste that different if it is coming from a live or a dead animal. What the japanese are after is the ultimate freshness, and obviously that would be a still live fish. They achieve that in that dish, but it simply could not taste different than a fish that has been dead for two minutes. That is what is so cruel about this stuff.

It reminds me of watching a wildebeast in africa get taken down by some lions and then they were eating it while it was still alive. Kind of the same thing.

Alas, the off-line world has been consuming my time. :( It’s caused me to miss many a great discussion and debate here. (But, and here’s a very cool thing about this community, whenever the Bush administration has done something really scary in the realm of world politics I’ve been able to come here and see the debate and remember that the Bush administration does NOT represent the opinions of all Americans, and that there are even Americans who would have a position to the left of mine. I think that to dispel some of the world stereotypes about Americans what we could do is to set up dedicated ClutchFans D&D terminals in various places in the ME and around the world and let’m all join the discussion. That would change a lot of people’s minds for the better very quickly. That’s a solution I think Jurgen Habermas would be proud of. ;))

Thank you very much LeGrouper. As I recall you were one of the um … “less enlightened” debaters.

Actually, it sometimes does make a difference whether a fish has been sitting around for a few minutes or served fresh. Kinda hard to describe exactly. I have had several fish and shrimp that was served raw fresh from the tank, and I can tell a difference in most of those cases. Probably something to do with the oxidation process, which can happen relatively fast (minutes). I do think that it is an aquired palate (meaning if you don't eat raw fish on a very regular basis and have had different grades of the fish, it might be hard to distinguish).

Although, I do agree that it may sound cruel and that many times it might be used for "show" rather than just taste. You have to understand that unless you are a total vegan or at least a vegetarian most of the food that is processed (meat) is not all that pleasant. Ever imagine how that chicken came to your plate or that hunk of steak. They don't all live on a nice pasture being fed whole grains by Farmer Bob you know... Kinda scary if you think about it. I guess man isn't too far from the lions and other animals out there.
