Let's say aliens did this. Will it change anything in your life? Whoever created this wants people to believe illegal aliens leave their mark. That this world is overpopulated and that people need to die. I don't think anyone should play God even if the cake is a lie.
To play alien advocate there could be a variety of reasons. For one they don't want to attract a lot of attention since that might lead to a negative backlash towards them, such as people trying to shoot down their craft. The publicity might make it difficult for them to conduct their research as if most humans knew of their present it might taint a control group for their experiments. They might have something like the prime directive where they aren't allowed to interfere with the normal course of human development and making their presence widely known would cause that. Finally they are aliens with motives and methodologies that make no sense to human understanding.
