Critical: we must not pickup a back up C (in FA)

Well, we do still have Hayes and Andersen in addition to Hill. Plus Scola can play some 5. If we can get Miller for vet min for 3 years, and Les is willing to pay, what's the harm. He can ride the bench if we don't need him, and he may be value added in a trade deadline. Only reasons not to sign him are

a - if you think he'll be a cancer if he doesn't get minutes
b - Les doesn't want to pay the tax
c - we don't have the roster space.

    AB
    Lowry
    martin
    taylor
    bud
    ariza
    battier
    jeffries
    pat
    scola
    hill
    yao
    hayes
    andersen
    that other guy

That's 15 already. So assuming andersen and that other guy don't suit up or get cut, getting a FA means thant Taylor or Pat (or Hill) don't suit up.

So my verdict is wait till after the summer league and go from there.

Hill can deveop as the backup 4 we need a backup C cuz Yao is gona start off really slow and pick it up at theend of the yr.. who would u want shouldering the bulk of the C load? an inexperienced underdevloped Hill? or a capable veteran? if u want the former then ur conceding that this season isnt a yr we should think about trying to think about going after a championship.. mayb ur cool with developing our talented prospects at the expense of losing but not me dude, like I said earlier Jordan can simply continue his development at the 4

I agree completely. If not Hill as the backup to Yao he has to be Scolas backup to see what we have. I know alot Hayes fans out there but really need to get rid of that guy so he wont be stunting PatPats growth or Hills who are more important. Just remove him from Adelmans temptaiont to make us purposely smaller than other teams frontline just because he likes Chuck so much.

Disagree. We are in a win-mode now. There's no other way to slice it.

Besides, any backup center we get is going to be necessary BEFORE we know if Yao can play again or not. Because he would be filling in time while we work Yao in slowly. You can't just decide prematurely that Yao may get injured. As much as it pains me to say, Morey must enter the season fully expect Yao to be healthy. Because if he errs on the wrong side(holding back and cost us a few games when Yao really is healthy), then we could be destroying a golden chance to go deep in the playoffs.

Without a doubt. Hill will foul out quickly, and Chuck/Andersen can't hold the fort.
We also have to look towards a future replacement for Yao.

I agree we are in win now mode. To win now, or as you say, go deep into the playoffs, we need to assume Yao will to be able to play around 25mpg, possibly higher in the playoffs if he's healthy. While he is doing that in the regular season, that leaves around 20 backup minutes at C.

Where you (and some of the other posters) seem to disagree is (i) comparing the difference between Hill's and Miller's (or other backup C's) production, and (ii) determining whether any incremental difference is worth sacrificing Hill's development.

My point is that Hill should be given that chance because the options out there, like Brad Miller, won't significantly outproduce Hill --at least IMO. I'd rather give those minutes to Hill to develop him, which Adelman has proven he can do.

For those saying --- dude, what if Yao goes down...We need a proven player that can play C. You know as well as I do that if Yao goes down, so does our season. We're looking at a repeat of last year, with an upside of an 8 seed and first round exit -- at best. I'm hoping my man Yao holds up, but if he doesn't, it's time to go to Plan B, or begin determining what Plan B is.

I diagree with the disagreers. Hill is sufficient if you use all of his fouls and then you use Hayes Scola or Patterson. Thats alot of beef to throw at people thw whole game and gives Yao the needed rest.

Sorry Riley Dog but Jordon Hill is unable to play the Center position.
He is a true forward and lacks all the skills to be a Center, at least that's what i saw this afternoon! :p
We certainly are not in a win now mode, we are rebuilding after the loss of our Star player Tracy McGrady.

Riley is right. If Yao goes down, so does Houston. This team is built right now around him. Hill needs minutes so he can develope into a better player. He can't do that if we get someone that takes his minutes away. We saw tonight how he played great in the second half of the SL. By Hill getting minutes, it's a win-win situation. He can either net us a better player or Houston can keep him. Either way, it's important for him to play.

I'm not oppose to us getting a back up center. I just dont want to get a player that's going to hurt us cap wise.

i agree JH will struggle at C. and I agree that we are not in a win now mode (since we didnt land Bosh). With that said, why would we pickup a bandaid at Center if we are not in win now mode. It makes no sense. Develop Hill. We always have Hayes as a backup. I like what I see in PPatt so giving him extra time at 4 isnt so bad. We didnt lose Tmac, he quit on us.

You guys are crazy if you think we shouldn't get a backup center. Riley, as a Rockets fan, i am surprised that you would give up so easily. If Lebron going to the Heat scares you that much, then you should not post anymore. You're ready to throw in the towel already and the season hasn't even started yet. You sound like a quitter and quitters shouldn't even associate themselves with the Rockets. This team is so close to contending that i can taste it!! Please stop with all the loser talk. Face it, Hill is a PF. Nothing more, nothing less. Forcing him to be a center is like season suicide. Remember we tried the wait and see game last season and you see how that turned out. We would be wasting our players talents and time by claiming that this is a rebuilding stage. This thread sucks!! Don't get a backup center.. be serious!!!

As I have said before, many times, in many ways: there is no logical reason for believing that Yao will be healthy for this season or any time in the future. Reasons: history, physics, anatomy, statistical probability. The good news, this is the last year of his contract. The bad news, the Rocket's owner will probably resign him before training camp (huge mistake) and will thereby sentence the Rockets to basketball hades for many seasons to come. Conclusion: signing a back up center is a must.

I think it's smart thinking, but when you consider durability and high-iq players, I think it would be smart to sign Brad Miller.

He might not start, but he knows the offense and can provide leadership to Hill, etc...

We can't go into the season without another big to help out Yao. Chuck can't get it done, and offensively, he is a liability.

    I miss Deke.

There are plenty of logical reasons why Yao could be healthy this season. He's rehabbed for a year. He'll play fewer minutes. He's lost weight which will reduce the pressure on his feet. He won't have to shoulder as much of the offensive load. The organization will pay far more attention to his health.

    See? Plenty of reasons.

Let me take a stab at a response.
    - I can be a little crazy, yep.
    - I've given up nothing. I think the Rockets can grab the 2-6 seed in the West. My towel is thick, cotton, blue and sitting on the towel rack in my bathroom. Not on the floor. Wifey would get mad.
    - I'm not a quitter. If anything, I can be stubborn and champion lost causes long past their time.
    - You don't seem to like Hill much. Perhaps he didn't do as well as you had hoped in the summer league game tonight. I happen to think a lot of Hill. He flashed a lot of potential in real NBA games last year. I was about 20 feet away from Daryl Morey when he said that Hill was a top 6-7 prospect in last year's draft and is the size of half of the centers in the league. Personally, I think Morey's really smart, so I'm willing to give real NBA game minutes to Hill to develop him. You're not quitting on Hill so easily, are you?
    - I don't understand how we tried "the wait and see game" last year. Yao was hurt. So we developed our players. I guess maybe you're referring to waiting on Tmac? I think that little situation worked out pretty well actually.
    - Are you thinking that we're rebuilding? Damn, I was thinking that we are in a win-now/win it all mode. That's why I'm posting about Yao's foot - where winning happens -- if its working. That's why I'm posting about Hill's untapped potential.
    - Finally, DaDakota issued a brief, but concurring opinion. Seriously, look on page 1 or page 2. Its in there somewhere. I'm sure of it. That's heady stuff, like Cardozo in Palgraf v. Long Island Railroad company.

[.....Scholarly parenthetical -- That's the one where a passenger was trying to catch a train and train employees tried to help him on the train, but in doing so dislodged a package of fireworks, which went off and caused a scale (you know, the thing they use to weigh other things) to fall and hit a lady, and then the lady sued the railroad for negligence of its employees, but Cardozo said no because the consequences of your actions have to be limited to what's reasonably foreseeable, otherwise the world becomes a legal mess because everything is connected to everything, and you could end up with a really, really negative Pay-It-Forward type of a situation, which wouldn't be good a all.....)

Anyway, it's like Rule 3 or 4 of Clutchfans -- If Dada agrees, then /thread. OP is right.

I guess I could live with Brad Miller on a 1 year deal, but dammit, that probably cuts into Jordan Hill's time. He's already going to have an inferiority complex, what with PatPat never missing his shots and draining threes and looking all I-know-how-to-play-basketball and everything.

I'd take Miller maybe to drop yao's minutes to 22.5 mpg. That gives Miller 10 minutes a night and the rest goes to Hill. that's my final offer. Or no miller and that's that.

I like how you ended that post.

    "See? Plenty of reasons."

Short, catchy, responsive to the prior post, and just a little funny. I'm going to rep you on that one.

On paper it sounds right, but given all the external factors this makes no sense for us. It sorta goes back to the Bima article about what we would be looking to do in the next offseason, but here are a couple of points I feel are true:

    1. It makes no sense for the Rockets to be planning to have any excess cap space. If this year told us anything, it was that no matter how "wide open" the free agency market looks for teams with money to offer, in reality the decisions of the max contract players had already been months in the making. Wade, Bosh, Lebron, and Amare looked like they had their sights set on a certain destination even while the season was going on. Next year the pickings get slimmer, and there is no real draw for a player like Carmelo Anthony to up and leave Denver to come to Houston, even in the context of a SnT where we could pay him as much as Denver. As a final point, no player outside the top 10-15 is worthy of a max contract, and given the liberal spending of teams in this offseason it's practically useless to try to catch a fish on the open market. Everyone making between MLE and max seems to be overpaid these days.

    2. These Rockets, so far as they are run by Daryl Morey, will never be in "rebuild" mode. It just physically cannot happen given how much talent he's collected on this roster and how deep we are. No matter who goes down we'll have quality players on the bench ready to pick up the slack. Almost everyone besides Yao, Battier, and Jeffries is underpaid on this roster. Ok fine, David Anderson maybe doesn't deserve 2.5M. You're splitting hairs here though. Last year taught us that this Rockets team will always be competitive, and if we are ever to have a top 5 pick it'll be through trades with other teams, like we attempted to do with New York.

So the question remains, how is Houston to get its superstar, its top 10 talent if Yao is not the man? It seems to me like Morey's going to keep the ship adrift, continue to accrue assets up the wazzoo, and hopefully down the line Pau Gasol trade #2 (or Kevin Garnett trade #2) will happen, and we'll be the best candidates to be on the receiving end. It's worked for the last three champions after all.
