It's not a done deal yet, this is just the transfer fee that ManU has accepted, Ronaldo still has to accept the offer. Real Madrid is getting a lot of slack for making such a big offer when the unemployment rate in Spain is about 18-20%. This club is bigger than ManU in terms of revenue, and they arn't afraid to spend it, I guess Ronaldo is as good as gone. If they get David Villa as well that would be sick.... If anyone would care to explain to a neophyte, how do transfer fees work? I get that Manchester United & Real Madrid act as the New York Yankees of football, buying up all the other teams' talent when they mature. I just don't understand how free agency / trades work. If my understanding is correct, this is a fee paid by Club A to Club B for the rights to sign a player currently under contract with Club B. Does any of such a record fee go to the player himself, and Club B only gets a percentage? Or is all of the reported fee going straight to Club B, and the player's contract with Team A is negotiated separately, an entirely different issue?
You're right about how it works but I should add that the player gets a percentage of the transfer fee and that lessens the signing bonus that the player would get at the new team. Plus the new contract is negotiated separately. The fee is also broken down and paid yearly not all at once.

I'm a United fan but I have nothing but respect for Arsenal. They're doing things the right way and I bet they finally start adding to the Emirates trophy cabinet this season. They aren't mortgaged to the hilt like certain clubs such as the one I support and the filthy scummy club from the red side of Liverpool and in the end you'll see the results. I think when Stan Kroenke finally gets a good hold in the boardroom there'll be a bit more cash to splash. My two cents. PS. That is true, but if they cannot get an agreement with Ronaldo they will not have to pay. And usually they already had contact with the player they wan tto sign, so they know if he is willing to play for them and how much salary they want.

Speaking of Ronny and European women, the lack of passion American athletes have for their professional sports translates into there personal lives. When you look at the beautiful women young stars of international sports like soccer and formula 1 have available to them, then you look at the "thick" pieces of trashy crap most American athletes have to settle for, you realize why they want to settle down so quickly. Derek Jeter is the exception here, overseas he would be the norm. Granted baseball players can have some classy looking WAGS but they are pretty mundane women. This also leads American women to being helpless against the charm of most foreign men who need actual charm, charisma and pizzazz to pull beautiful women, a little more than just having a "decent head on your shoulders".
