This. There's no reason for it. Seahawks didn't change when they went to the NFC. The Brewers didn't change when they went to the NL. There's absolutely no reason to go that drastic.
Not that we got a ton of tradition, but yeah, don't change the name. It fits the town's theme just fine.
I can't imagine the team as anything other than the Astros. I mean, I know they used to be the Colt .45s, and maybe there was a bunch of crotchety old dudes that complained about the name change back then...but there is way too much history with the name Astros now for a change.
Why not? It's time for change. It's not like the Astros carry a storied history with multiple championships. They aren't the Yankees.
Man, I shocked about this. I was willing to give Crane the benefit of the doubt, but he's way, way off base here. The fact he's even considering changing the name is ridiculous. Team's name are VERY important. Not only emotionally to the fans but also financially as well. Ask any Fortune 500 company: brand recognition is very difficult to obtain and to think about throwing it away just cause we're moving the AL is r****ded.
Because they have been the Astros for nearly 50 years. You don't change the name of a franchise that has been around for so long. It is irrelevant that the Astros have not won titles, people still have fond memories of the team and what they have meant to the city and fans. Nolan Ryan... Mike Scott... JR Richard ... Roy Oswalt... Craig Biggio ... Jeff Bagwell .... 2005, 1980, 1986 .... Dave Smith, Bill Doran, Joe Morgan, Lance Berkman... etc. You don't just throw all that away, it is bad enough that they are changing leagues... Sounds to me like you are not an Astros fan.... should the Rangers, Mariners, Pirates, Padres and a dozen other teams change their name because they havent won a title in their fans lifetime? The Cubs? They are the Houston Astros, CASE CLOSED
He won't change the name, and has not said he intends to, he only said he will consider it... just like he will consider 100 other things.
Why, because we can finally bring in our own food and beer prices aren't outrageous? There's nowhere to go but up. McLane already sold our future by paying no attention to the farm system.
I seriously doubt they will change the name. I think the point that Crane is making is that he is leaving no stone unturned in trying to get this franchise in gear. I love the lowered ticket and beer prices and the ability to bring in your own food. Even though the product still isn't going to be any good this next season, this makes it more likely that I'll go to more games.
This. I wish he wouldn't have even mentioned it. He could have just said they'd look at the uniform and colors and the point would have been made. But I'd be shocked, disappointed and pissed off if they did change the name. THAT would stop me from buying tickets far more than moving to the AL. Like all the other changes though.
