A "true fan"? I have to side with msn because I don't believe in "fan purity tests" either. If I'm reading you right then by your definition, a true fan only cares for the team colors and uniform and not results. Anyone else who wants said team to achieve some success and who gets fed up with years of losing, incompetence of the organization and mind-numbing mediocrity is no longer a true fan. Having grown up in Houston and suffering through DECADES of the Houston Oilers, I would never presume to cast judgement on someone who has reached their personal limit on futility with a Houston team because I can certainly empathize with their position. No offense intended but to be a true fan in the manner you describe requires one to be somewhat of a sucker and a smuck.
He has helped the running game to an extent, but he is also in charge of the same offense that never decides to score until the 4th quarter. He has been a terrible play caller in the passing game, putting Schaub in horrible situations far too often.
Well, that's exactly how I approached this season for both the Rockets and Texans: Ho-Hum. I had zero expectations for both and so far, I haven't been either surprised nor disappointed in the least. Until I see both organizations make the substantive changes they need to improve, I will continue to curb my enthusiasm for both. I find it's much better on the blood pressure and the old prostate that way.
This. ...and my "STFU" and "dbag" comments remain open to anyone who compares fandom with people they don't even know...especially those who claim to have reached the holy grail: "TRUE FANDOM".
That's not what I'm saying at all, results are important. The point I have failed miserably in making is that I support the Texans regardless of who is coaching the team, or who is wearing the uniform. I support all the Houston Teams, and I always will. I will never not be a fan because of personnel decisions. I'm a native Houstonian, and I support all the Houston teams, I always have and I always will. If that makes me a sucker and a schmuck, then I guess I am. I suppose I am loyal to a fault. If the rockets hired Karl Malone as head coach, and John Stockton as color commentator, I would still be a Rocket fan.
Completely agree with this. 100%. For me, this part is a little much. It's the same kind of thing: one set of people call the others "fairweather" or "disloyal", while the other side hurls "homer" or "sucker" or "shmuck" labels. It's all bull****, IMO. People are different. Just enjoy them: people *and* our POS sports franchises.
No one has a problem with this. But when you labelled someone else (thus setting yourself up as better, whether that's what you intended or not), that was OTT. By the way, I'm right there with you. I'm nuts for all the Houston teams just because their jerseys say, "Houston" on them. I'm even interested in the Aeros and HBU, for cryin' out loud. I love 'em all. I mean I get your point and all, but... eww.
I did that initially with the Texans...in the preseason. Well, I didn't actually do it because I watched religously...but I picked them to be an 8-8 team. I was critical of them not making more noise in free agency. Then I went to the first game against the Colts and was convinced I was really, really wrong. I was convinced they were different this year. And I believed the defense (specifically pass defense) would improve enough for everything to be perfect heading into the playoffs. Wow, was I wrong. I totally had ho-hum expectations about the Rockets though. I still watch...and they're playing well right now and exceeding my expectations. But I've been on the "it's time to move away from Yao" train for quite a long time now....and felt that the expectation that this season would be built around him was complete fool's gold.
