I'm only surprised by how many "experts" there are out there on who should coach the Cowboys and how set they are in their line of thinking...almost as if they should have been involved in the hiring process.

Hmmmm. Phillips is like the perfect 1-year stopgap solution, so perhaps there is some truth to the rumor that Cowher will be hired after next season.

I'm going to post this here and hope someone knows the answer. There's a story about Bum Phillips when he coached the Saints. He gave the pregame speech about how they were going to hit their opponent (I think it was the Steelers) harder and beat them. The entire team sat through the entire speech, and when he was through, a player said, "Coach, we're playing the Chiefs."

Does anyone know the whole story on this? I'd like to use it in a paper.

Now.. I loved Bum... But I know Dallas and their fickle fans...

If the season ever turns ugly in the win/loss column, I can see the signs...

"Hey Wade, Your Dad Was A Bum Too"

    ...or the like.

How awesome would it be if a current coach broke out a Landry-esqu look on the field. Any kind of suit and hat. It would look really odd after so many years of coaches wearing warmups and windsuits and the like.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    Sincerely,

    Chan Gailey and Dave Campo

Grambling's head coach wears a suit and tie on the field. Looks pretty pimp.

You mean like this? Nolan won a fight with the league to wear a suit. It just had to be Reebok.

I am a Cowboys fan and I don't have a huge problem with this. I would prefer Wade Phillips as defensive coord, but I think he'll do a good job. The Cowboys have 3-4 personnel in place, very good front, and roy williams whose does best playing close to the line of scrimmage and playing the run, which he can do in the 3-4. Phillips is agressive on defense, he blitzes a lot, expect Demarcus Ware and Greg Ellis to start putting up huge sack numbers and causing a lot of problems for offenses.

Hiring Wade Philips actually made a heck of a lot more sense, than Pittsburgh hiring Mike Tomlin, a defensive coordinator that runs cover 2. The Steelers have great 3-4 personnel in place, and are not suited to cover 2 at all. Their d-line are all big space eaters and wont be able to pressure the and the OLB's are 3-4 OLBs and are best suited toward blitzing and edge rushing like Joey Porter. Polamalu is a big hitter that excels at playing the run, blitzing and being around the line of scrimmage, he is not as good at coverage, and in the cover he'll be asked to cover half of the field. Steelers are in trouble, they should have forked up the cash to Cowher.

The only problem I see with the Phillips hiring is the offense. I wish they could get Norv Turner to be OC, if not I would worry about the offense. They have a lot of talent on offense with Glenn, Owens, Witten, Jones, Barber and they have a very talented young QB in Romo who needs coaching and mentoring, and entrusting Tony Romo and the offense to Jason Garrett who has never even been a coordinator is not a good idea IMO.

not yet. which is more than we can say for turner.

would you have been underwhelmed by the hiring of tom landry? the point for true fans isn't to pee your pants with joy because the coach is a good choice. it's why i am satisfied with jvg. and why i like this pick.

while turner wasn't my first chioce, he was far ahead of norv. i did want a coach who had experience, and only plans to be around 2-4 years... garrett is the next line if he's still around, or maybe stoops will be ready by then.

garrett and sparano sharing the play calling duties would be my guess.... though garrett hasn't officially been given the OC title yet.

isn't there a rule saying they have to wear what they do? they're not allowed to wear a suit for some reason, maybe because of the uniform endorsements??

Jack Del Rio wore a suit last year:

The look I liked when I was a kid was the coach in a suit...but then he always had on white socks and cleats.

Yea, he was a disaster. That was back when the Raiders owned us. Elway may have had some of his greatest offensive seasons but the defense couldn't stop anyone (especially the Raiders). And every time the other team would score, the camera would show Wade on the sidelines just shrugging his shoulders. I really detested seeing that.

Wade Phillips benched Flutie after he led the Bills to a playoff spot. He then started Rob freakin' Johnson the last game of the season. Then the Music City Miracle happened. If Flutie had remained the starter, things might be different. Anyhow, Wade Phillips is an idiot.
