Adam_Schefter Look for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to look for a big-name coach. But don't look for former Steelers HC Bill Cowher to wind up in Dallas.
Anytime the owner tells the media that the coach will last until the end of the season, the coach should go pack their backs immediately.
As for Cowher, $$ talks baby. If Parcells could manage it, Cowher could too. But who else is out there? I have lost all confidence in Garrett, the guy has lost whatever mojo he had over the last few years, and he'll be elsewhere next year too. So this team needs a complete coaching overhaul. The good thing, if you can call it that, is that the actual talent level of the players is very high almost across the board, plus they will have very high draft picks coming up, so a couple of good DB's and a new running back, couple young OL's to groom, plus playing a last-place schedule, next season will probably be a big rebound year. So if not Cowher, then who? Don't be surprised to see Jerry's eyes drifting over toward Baylor... Now wouldn't THAT be a cool thing? The guy's been a winner everywhere, so why not? It can't be worse than retreads like Wade or never-were's like Gailey and Campo. Oh, and what's up with the Dallascowboys.com website?? Has it been hijacked?
Parcells took the job here for the $$$. He'd just gone through an expensive divorce and Jerry tossed $17M his way. No way in hell Cowher comes to Dallas - if anything, he's headed to the Panthers which is where he's living now. Same thing for Dungy - he's working TV and his ministry and looks tanned and rested so why come aboard the Titanic and take the wheel from captain Jones? Outside of John Fox, I cannot see any coach of stature coming to coach Dallas. The situation is akin to when Campo ended up as head coach because nobody out there wanted to coach in Dallas. So look for Garrett to stay on as HC. That would be more in keeping with how Jerry operates because it leaves him still in charge of screwing things up and allows him, and not the head coach, to continue being the face of the franchise. Also: Naming him interim head coach sidesteps the Rooney Rule quite nicely. As for the dallascowboys.com website, one of Jerry's sons forgot to pay the domain registration up at Network Solutions so the site went offline for a few hours.
LOL! I wonder how much $$$ the person who owned the domain for those hours made off of Numb Nutz Jones.
The firing of Wade was a big relief to most Cowboys fans out there. Most of us were paralyzed that Jerry would be too proud to override himself and drag Wade along for the rest of this disaster. The Cowboys need serious changes, but at least have some talent in place for next year.
That's a funny difference between American sports and "football/soccer" in Europe. In Europe, if the owner gives the coach a "vote of confidence", best believe the coach is DONE! In America, if the owner gives the coach a "vote of confidence" more often than not the coach stays on and I think thats why most believed Jerry that Wade would stay on.
Couldnt have said it better myself but don't overlook Gruden. There's a reason he is odds on favourite for the job. But now I agree with you on Garrett as head coach come next season(whenever that may be thanks to the impending lockout). I'll explain my Garrett h/c reasons next post.
Regarding Jason Garrett- Had his first full day as HC today and his first post practice presser. Off the bat, the guy sounds like a white Mike Tomlin. I was highly impressed just listening to him and he is from the completely opposite end of the spectrum than Wade was at. Garrett had no woe is me attitude about him or about his team. You can tell he is focused on the task at hand and is taking each week as it comes. Starting on Sunday at 4.15pm at Giants stadium cos the Giants will be there.(Those who listened to his press conf. will get the 4:15 reference). Garrett makes one believe that the team that shows up on Sunday wearing the star on their helmet may play with more heart than they've shown all season but they WILL play with fear for their jobs in their eyes because no one is safe under him. He had the team wearing pads today and they'll do so each Wednesday for the rest of the season under him, unlike how it was under Wade. Garrett unlike Wade, gives one the impression that if a player makes a mistake he won't tell the media to blame him instead. He will expect the player to be accountable but at the same time won't drag the player under the bus. Garrett I believe will have more leeway regarding disciplinary issues under Jerry Jones than Wade had because, Garrett has a relationship with Jerry in which Jerry can trust Garretts decision making in such matters in ways Jerry probably didnt trust Wade. Another thing brought up this week was how Garrett tried to stay in the background over the past few seasons so as not to upstage Wade. Garrett knew he had the big salary but he wasn't the head coach and he wasnt the type to undermine Wade. Despite that, there were a number of things Garrett wanted changed under Wade and now he(JG) can do so. The culture at Valley Ranch was too lax and the practices were just like the weak training camps Wade conducted, just like "camp cupcake". Garrett is not going to be a soft touch and players will not walk over him like they did with Wade. I think even if the Cowboys lose every game the rest of the season, under Jason Garrett it won't be for a lack of effort or heart. I think Jerry will eventually give him the job for next season(whenever that is).

Jason Garrett may turn out to be a good motivator and less of a fat doormat than Phillips, but lets not forget that JG has been calling the plays during the float of this Titanic? Hey JG, why do you let Marion B continue to falter as a primary back. Especially near the goal line (supposedly his specialty)? Or why do you not attempt to run Felix Jones outside or off the edge more than once a game? Why doesnt Tashard Choice (better than Barber IMO) even play? The playcalling on offense has not been what it was two years ago. The Cowboys need to dedicate the rest of the season to sizing up Stephen McGee and the other young guys.
Not forgotten at all. His playcalling and some of his personnel decisions have left much to be desired. You forgot to mention he okayed the decision to retain Brad Johnson as backup qb when everyone and their grannie could see Brad Johnson had nothing left during pre-season.
If the Cowboys get the first pick, they should take Luck, because I just think you can't pass on him. But since Buffalo will not win a game, Dallas is more likely to finish with the 2nd or 3rd pick. The Cowboys have a brutal schedule left and will finish with no more than 3 wins IMO. The CB from LSU is supposedly the best corner prospect to come along in awhile and I really hope the Cowboys grab him. After that, I really would like to see them trade up using there 2nd round pick to somewhere in the teens and snag either an impact offensive lineman or the best defensive lineman available.
Right. He's had complete control over the offense and it is a disaster. You simply cannot spin that away. I personally believe the line of reasoning that he didn't want to upstage Wade to be a cop-out but at least it isn't as stupid as Mickey Spagnola's defense of Garrett to Newy Scruggs where he told Newy you could see Garrett's leadership ability in that first press conference where Garrett answered questions while standing instead of sitting down like Wade always did.
I'm perfectly fine giving JG the rest of this season to see what he can do. I like the guy. I think he gets a bad rap mainly because our offensive line is so inept and getting beat by defenders constantly. The plays called could be as sound as could be but, when your players execute miserably, it all comes back to the offensive coordinator. The fact is the Cowboys have some terrible blockers on offense. Witten has to be the worst blocking tight end in the league. Witten's stock has fallen. I'm not even sure he is a top 10 tight end in the league any more. He's been pretty bad except catching the ball. The main o-line guys have gotten beat all year. We have to replace some of those guys in the off-season with the draft. Games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage. (Un)fortunately for the Cowboys, they are losing on the line on both sides of the ball. It's pretty hard to execute plays when you are getting your butt kicked in the individual battles.
