Yeah, I booked through my credit card for travel insurance protection or whatever, but just not sure if "global virus scare" is covered under the policy. Probably going to call them next week. I can eat it if I have to. My main concern is we were also bringing our 3 and 5 year old.
These fatality rates are always going to be wrong until long after this is over. On one hand, the # of cases is always going to be underestimated because people aren't all symptomatic and even some who are may never get tested. On the flipside, there are still currently infected people that will die, so the death rate of current known cases will increase. So basically, both the numerator and denominator will keep increasing even after the last case actually transmits.
Good move by the city. The festival obviously wanted the show to go on, but the long-term risk isn't worth it this year. I feel bad for the service industry folks who depend on this festival, but hopefully it'll be up and running again next year. SXSW's state is understandably pissy and the city shouldn't have said they saw no risk earlier in the week. I do wonder if UT will play all of its basketball, baseball softball games without a crowd for a while (cue the jokes about basketball attendance).
A glimpse of the front line via some California hospitals. Our country has really been caught flat-footed, no matter who you’d like to blame. not a fun read: https://m.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Chaos-at-hospitals-due-to-shortage-of-coronavirus-15111888.php
Heard that it’s not covered by a lot of protection plans. My sister cancelled their trip to Italy recently and United wasn’t willing to provide any type of refund or credit. They threatened to cancel the credit card and they ended up giving them credit for the flights. Might be your best option if insurance doesn’t cover it. But definitely not worth the risk, hope y’all can make up for it another time.
I don't want to be 'that guy,' but it isn't really slowing down. Seriously, if we have 100,000 confirmed cases right now, you could very easily have 100 million or more by May (on the current rate of increase it would be more). We just don't know how much of a "warmer weather" effect there will be with this one yet. EDIT: I say that as someone with purchased travel (domestic in April, international long vacation, first in years, in June). Trying to talk my wife out of the April trip but it's a family thing...
Cases skyrocketing everywhere except for China, where it's slowing down... Gotta give it to them, they didn't mess around and fully committed to containing it.
Yeah, they measured the hell out of it and then got authoritarian on everybody. Without data, you got nothing but pain and fear, no matter what else you do.
Containment is futile now. Not only for underdeveloped countries. Not only for western countries who are hesitant to enforce drastic proactive measures. Even for China. At most some very remote areas like Greenland or some tiny countries with great policing like Singapore can contain it. Or some countries who are very rural like the Mongolian steppes. This is a pandemic. Even if you do everything good in your house, there will be flowbacks. Who can close down borders for 6 months and enforce travel bans for everyone? Who can keep their people quarantine for 4 months?
I am in despair on the stupidity of the people. It is the 4 weeks before Easter and all old people are going to church. What does our CDC says? "Communion is safe" Even some crazy doctors go in tv and said that they will go to church and they will be safe because THEY BELIEVE IN GOD. Old people are already hard to convince not to go to church in the first place now if they hear some idiotic "doctors" good luck. How many have to die first for measures to be taken?
When confronted with an unstoppable force that can't be denied or "fake news"ed or "hoax"ed out of existence, our current government is behaving no differently from all the other authoritarian regimes, which is to obfuscate and misdirect, and this should be embarrassing and infuriating for all Americans.
Good Lord, how far have we fallen https://www.theatlantic.com/health/...mericans-have-been-tested-coronavirus/607597/
I think the Diamond Princess might offer a good clue for the time being. They were isolated and monitored for over a month and I believe they tested everyone. 696 total cases, 6 deaths, 34 still in serious/critical condition. The current fatality rate is 0.86%. Smaller sample, but it provides a good clue and together with the age/med conditions of that population could provide even more valuable data.
I'm really confused by comments like this in a March 6th article. Though there are no known instances of community spread of the virus in California
Well yeah..... "Thats Jesus' blood. God will protect us. We shall sprinkle ourselves with Holy water."
