If it clearly states on the receipt that paying the gratuity is required then I can 100% understand where this establishment is coming from. Do they need to have the people arrested? No, but at the same time you can't just walk out after only partial payment. Lesson learned.

Well sounds like they are cutting their nose off to spite their faces (or something like that). I mean, I guess - they did what they felt they needed to do but I think in the long run, they didn't really think this thing out and how it would impact their future business.

YES, WE CAN!!!! *move it to the D&D*

DUH. Never go to a restaurant where the gratuity is "required." Bullcrap. It is your job to serve me, but I don't have to pay you extra or a "tip" because you're a lousy waiter. It's not my fault the restaurant pays you so little. Also, to the restaurant owners, good luck getting more clientele.

I never understoood where the % of tips came from....

I mean if I ate a $10 chicken plate or $29 steak .... is it worth $3 more to bring out that plate of steak to the table?

I know people should tip but what sets it on the % of the food cost you order?

    Then it's not a gratuity. It's a service change.

The whole American society of tipping is bull**** anyway.

Have any of yall ever traveled around the world? Lots of countries don't even have tipping, and I'm not talking about 3rd-world places.

Japan for example...there is no tipping there and it's actually frowned upon. My family ate at a medium-tier sitdown restaurant, and we had a really nice waitress that was great. Even though we knew there was no reason to tip, we left her a nice amount as we left the place.

Well about 2 minutes later, after we already went up a flight of escalators (this was in a mall), we heard someone yelling and running from behind us...it was the waitress and she was carrying the tip money and told us that she cannot accept it, and she was genuinely embarrassed. I don't even know how the heck she found us. But that shows you how nice and true they are.

Same deal in China, you don't really tip in restaurants there either.

Why can't America be like this? The whole idea behind tipping is lame.

And the police actually sided with the bar owner when they arrested the couple??

    I'm amazed they didn't use a taser.

They'd have to change how wait staff is paid. Their salary is substantially below minimum wage, I think, because they work for tips. They may get $2/hr from their boss, but end up with $10/hr from tips. If we start paying wait staff properly, it would eliminate the need for tips.

Clearly, based on some of the other threads around here, the answer is no, most people here have not been outside of the country so they probably aren't aware of the tipping situation. And yes I agree with you 100%. In china and some of the other places I've been tipping is not standard and IMO it creates a much better atmosphere at a restaurant. You have genuine wait staff who aren't being fake friendly while trying to build up their tip.

Why would that be a good thing? Without tipping, there is no incentive at all for a waiter/waitress to provide good service. It's not good for the business, and it's not good for the customer.

Are you sure about that? Vinsanity addressed this point 2 posts up...

Granted, service in this country has generally gone to hell, but I really don't think tipping makes it any better or worse, especially when it's expected (or worse, mandatory!).

I've waited tables for many years and I'll be the first to jump up and say tipping should be earned and never enforced. I've since changed my opinion to: tipping should just be abolished. I hate the practice. And yes, that means they should get real pay, not this $2.50/hr bull****.

I was on a cruise recently and they've developed a system now where the 'gratuity' is added to your bill at the end of the cruise and then divvied up amongst the staff. I mean, what the hell is that?? I don't even give a tip to an individual anymore to say 'thank you'. I just get billed for it.

On the topic of this couple being arrested... just
