With a 6 year old and a 4 year old, there's plenty of things you could spend it on. Especially at Whole Foods, which isn't just about foods.

Where are they relocated to? Maybe food price and cost of living is more compared to Houston?

If you are in Tokyo, you need more than $240 a day for your groceries!:)

The beef jerky idea is awesome. Woody's Smokehouse once a week. I think they are open 24 hours? I'd totally drive to Centerville once a week. Show up at 11:45...buy $240 of everything,,,then at 12:01, start again. Thought of another thing.

    SPICES

I'd buy the best saffron money could buy.

Also, prosciutto and Spanish serrano lasts forever. I'd buy multiple full legs and hang them in the spare bedroom. Can you imagine a spare bedroom draped in hanging prosciutto and serrano. and wheels of cheese...complete with your 25yr old Balsamic Vinegar collection...haha

The per diem food allowance is only for food, no restaurants either because it is not travel allowance. Don't confuse the food allowance with a store allowance.

I think this is a pretty stupid idea by cisco. Why not just say yeah, this is what we are going to give you for the month and be done with it. Why make it a silly game: if you abuse this you are fired. It's the kind of silly thing big corporations think up. That's why I hate the corporate world. No common sense.

Buy out the Sushi bar and have an all-you-can-eat buffet with the next-door-neighbors.

    Real wasabi.

    Imported cheese.

    Kobe steaks.

    Gourmet Coffee beans.

    Pate

    Caviar

    240 a day?

Here in the Philippines my family averages 6,378 Philippine Pesos or 150 US dollars a month on groceries.

So if Cisco is dishing out $240 a day for 3 months, which i guess when converted to work days is an estimated 65.

    65 x 240 per day = 15,600 US $.
    15600 US $ = 663,312 Philippine ₱.

    663,312 ₱/6,378 ₱ per month = 104 months

    104 months/12 months = 8.67 years

That's an estimate of about 8.67 years worth of groceries for my family.

If you don't mind cooking every single course of every meal and you can live without steak or lots of pre-processed stuff; $240 a day is completely do-able. I'm not sure it would be that difficult eating at restaurants all the time either. More to the point, I'd be a little embarrassed if my AMEX or bank statement showed $1,800/month in food expenses and I'm over 3 bills.

You can't spend it at eateries? Man, that's tough. I could spend the bread at restaurants every day in my sleep. I'd find a way, though. Kobe beef and the like parked in the freezer, and why not? Haven't you ever gone in with a couple of folks and bought a grass fed cow, had it sliced and diced, and split it up? Done properly, freezing meat works just fine. When you're talking about high end stuff, sure, it's better fresh, but that's true with anything. Frozen high end beef is going to taste better than frozen beef from HEB!

So 60 a day per person?

    I think that's doable.

But going to the supermarket daily does feel like a chore though since you said no buying in advance.
