There is no team in the NBA that hasn’t made some bad moves. You think you could do better but have no idea what has transpired behind closed doors. You’re opinion is based on assumptions. Morey could have things planned we haven’t even heard about yet which could of effected his decisions thus far. Not to mention there is so much more to deals in the NBA and business in general that can make even the most logical and simple deal impossible to complete. So much has to go right even for the simplest deal when you are dealing with multiple people in such complicated situations. Owners, players, coaches, agents, players association all have to come together in a common agreement that everyone feels comfortable with. These are things that are not considered by the average fan. A really smart person once said "the smarter you get, the more you realize you dont know".
Thought I would add this. Dutt said talks were too preliminary to say if Lewis is considering the Rockets, but that Morey's overtures have at least have him willing to consider considering them. For now, though he said the SuperSonics have "sparked his interest." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/4936184.html Not bad for a moron huh solid?
I've only skimmed this thread, but most posters are missing an obvious point. Aaron Brooks is Adelman's pick. Adelman wanted him because he was living in Portland, he'd seen a lot of Brooks and liked him. Methinks, had he been living in Baton Rouge, the Rockets would have drafted Davis. Had he lived in Stillwater two years ago, he'd think the Rockets were set at PG.
Wow, Keith Van Horn a possibility? I think that might be speculative on Feigan's part but if that came to reality I'd sign our one way ticket out of the first round right now. Ugh.
Of course, I agree, but some of the Rocket's moves over the last several years are inexplicable from any vantage point, surely you agree. (the James-Alston trade was obviously illadvised because the Rockets tried desperately to reverse it) As to Morey, he is so new, not much of a track record. The draft was definitely a disappointment, though. I don't think Team Rockets addressed the most pressing needs or got the best talent available, which is an opinion to be sure.
Battier-LES, JVG and CD selection !! James - James a selfish shooting guard!- Morey Even so for the teams sake I hope Morey's selections work out!!!
A year off might have done him wonders with his body breaking down so often. He wasn't that bad just over paid. If the Rockets could snare him for the LLE as a backup behind Battier he'd be a great addition.
Possum - I think you're making FAR TOO MUCH of the "complications" of NBA Management. If anything, there is probably too much input coming from too many different directions for Morey to even process except for this $Ball stats. Drafts are not complicated things. Making a draft night deal might take a little finesse and a big pair of balls (sorry to the ladies on the board but some women I know have bigger balls than some of the guys... )... I have not yet been convinced that Morey did not get played by San Antonio and Phoenix. I am absolutely certain that S.A. would have taken splitter whether Brooks was there or not. And, since Phoenix took cash for #24, they could NOT HAVE BEEN that high on Brooks. We could have easily had Brooks at #31. That we got Landry is consolation prize at best. Until one of these guys is mentioned as valuable rotation asset for the ROX, my jury will remain firmly out on both. As for the doing better than Morey, this is all about Money. You either have permission to spend it, or you don't. If Morey and Les are on the same page, we should have had pick #24 and either Rudy or Morris Almond. I am truly scared of how good Utah is going to be next year and I see San Antonio and Utah, Dallas and Phoenix as the 1-4 seeds next year. Right now, if I had to gaze into a crystal ball, even going injury free for the entire year, the Rox will do no better than 5th or 6th. Add injuries or a weak PF addition and our stock will drop to near lottery level. It's going to take Adelman a year and an impact PF to make his system work the way it's designed. So, variables aside, yes, I could do the GM job better than Morey or CD (or whoever handed out all those ridiculous contracts that still have us paying players to simply go away....)
Morrey has already stated that Brooks was the top available player on his board when we picked. So he should of picked him whether he thought he would be available at 31 or not. Not to mention we IIRC we didnt have the 31st pick at the time we were picking 26. Apearently Brooks had some pretty impressive workouts so we should give the pick a chance is all im saying. As far as the draft not being complicated, well tahts easy for someone to say that has never been there. In fact we did have a deal in place that fell through because of a certain player falling to the team that we had the deal with. One of the complications I was talking about. Now I know you are going to say why didnt we just buy a pick like Portland. Well whos to say we didnt try? Maybe Pheonix didnt want to sell us a pick since we are alot closer to competing with them than Portland. Once again we'll never know.
I would have... Tried to buy that Phoenix pick (before Portland) and I would have drafted Morris Almond. I would be ok with Brooks @ 26 Like the Landry pick at 31 Would have taken Herbert Hill @ 54 1. Morris Almond 2. Aaron Brooks 3. Landry 4. Hill To be honest I had Gabe Pruitt ahead of Brooks so I would probably taken Pruitt- (but in hindsight and after thinking it over I do like Brooks quickness over Pruitt's size)
I did mention this in an earlier post. And also, isn't this the very thing that got JVG into so much trouble? Actually, Morey is being sneaky smart here because if mini-me, er Brooks washes out, he can go to Uncle Les and say "This was Adelman's choice, not mine. I wanted Big Baby Davis...".
I don't think that anybody can really say that they could've done better until we see the results of the finished product on the court. I'll admit the Brooks pick was a bit questionable but still a decent one. The Landry pick is a really good one. But I do agree that we should've taken Strawberry over Newly. If Adelman is lookin to really get out and run, Strawberry is a hell of an athlete.
With all the badass GM's on this board, shouldn't we at least get together and rule the middle school or YMCA leagues as coaches? I mean, can't we all coach defense like JVG, offense like Adelman, and run franchises like the Spurs? It's pretty simple right? Everyone can do it.....
All we need now is for someone on the board to take Morey's job and give us the scoop every now and then.
