i dont think he cant get past howard, howards puts up some huge numbers sometimes and that's hard to ignore and yao's consistency will be overlooked.

Well, I never said he was going to be over Howard. I strictly believe he will at least get into the 2nd team I hope.

If Numbers are going to prove it all, Duncan and KG would have no rights to get in the All-NBA team but they clearly will. Marcus Camby would probably get in over Yao if numbers meant everything.

Howard is clearly on the 1st team since he's going to be the DPOY.

Shaq shouldve won all the awards the yr they beat philly. He was 2nd ind scoring, rebs, and blks. He destroyed deke in the finals.

I think yao might make 2nd team this year. I think lebron is going to make 1st team considering his team defensive ranking.

    I see two things happening...

    1) Yao won't get it, because the voters will put another guard or forward in his spot.

    2) The voters will only vote for someone with flashy numbers...for blocks, like Marcus Camby or even Ronny Turiaf. The player doesn't necessarily have to be a great defender, but with decent rebounding numbers and a high percentage of block shots . . . Camby wasn't even a great defender in 06-07 (good defender, hardly great or game-changing defender in the way of Shane Battier or Dikembe Mutombo), but he won the whole thing.

So anything can happen I guess. . .

Dwight will edge him out but Yao could make the 2nd team easy.

I honestly think it depends on Tim Duncan like many posters here are saying. But instead of looking it from a positional standpoint, I am going to look at it from a player's dominance standpoint. I believe the media will definitely vote Mr. Howard as a 1st team center no matter what, because of the success the magic has this year. As to the other guard and forward spots, Lebron, CP3, Kobe are all locks. That leaves one forward spot open to either Mr. Duncan or Mr. Garnett. And who would they pick to be on that first team?

I think the media likes sensational story. We all know that the KG and boston story got old. So no more freebies for Mr. Garnett. On the other hand, there's been a growing dislike from the media about KG towards his bullying tendencies to lesser players (mind you in terms of statute, not name too). With KG's injury, it even makes the selection decision easier for the media imo.

I like Yao's chances on the second team also because who would deserve 2nd team forward spot besides duncan and dirk? amare? injured. chris bosh? his team suks so he deserves 3rd team center spot. david west? gimme a break.

You have to have gawdy stats to get any kind of award.

Yao has been really good for us defensively but i'm not sure he's the best defensive player in the league. As has been said, he can be a big liability in certain situations. Other great slow bigs like Shaq usually took advantage of that shooting PF matchup by taking it to them offensively and forcing the coach to put a big man in the game so it's usually not as obvious of an issue.

True, but then Again Patrick Ewing and Shaq were the same way. They both have won All-Defensive team awards before as well. I believe Yao can get in, because he certainly deserves to. It all depends on Duncan's list.

Wow, This is not about DPOY. This is about all-defensive team. Do you even know what that is?

10 players get voted in their by the media just like the All-NBA team but with 10 guys instead of 15.

Yao can make it, but he has to be voted in, which I don't think he will be. The problem is DPOY/All D team awards are rewarded to those who do well in defensive categories in the box score. It's shameful really, but that's the reality of it. That's why Battier never made 1st all D team ever in his whole career. And someone like Camby does.

    I know what it is.

Do you really think the media and everyone who votes for the teams is going to put Yao in the 2nd team? Please... They are going to vote for Zydrunas Ilgauskaus or Kendrick Perkins.

Good thread, I've also noticed Yao's defense really coming together over the past few weeks. When he's out of the game you can easily notice offensively that we're a little off but lately I've noticed it just as much defensively. And for those saying Tim Duncan is a better defensive center, I don't see it. I see them as pretty similar defensively.

I think you might be confusing the "All-Defensive Teams" with the regular All-NBA team because there is no way Amare, Bosh, and West should be in the running for any kind of defensive awards.

I don't think Yao will even make the second team because these awards are often based upon stats and reputation rather than a player's true impact on
    the game.

That is true about reputation being mainly the case, but Do you think Yao at least deserves to be on the 2nd team? I believe the Media might look at Yao, maybe if Yao increase his BPG to 2 by the end of the season.
