Could Tracy McGrady come back next year...as our starting Point Guard?

Magic Johnson was 6'9, and Penny Hardaway was 6'7, so why wouldn't he be able to play PG. I always thought he could play PG cause he can set up others by sucking in the defense and making plays. He can pass, he can dribble, and I think he could still drive. I think his age and health would say otherwise, though. Maybe 5 years ago he would have been an elite PG.

That would seem to me not a solid set up on the defense side. On the offense side, Rox have yet to find out whether TMac is willing to blend in with Coach Adelman's motion offense. If he don't play defense and acts as the ball-stopper again, we'll be back to the painstaking vicious cycle.

The current team without TMac has been improving with increasing chemistry. I have no confidence in TMac's playing attitude when he rejoined the team. It's quite possible that he would become the drama queen again if things didn't turn out nice for him in the initial stage of his return.

I prefer using his 22 mil for resigning promising players (e.g. Scola) and getting two younger and more athletic players - a center (as Yao's backup) and a SF/SG.

Lets say Tmac does come back 100% by start of next season (a low probability). I could see making him the starting PG to be able to get him, Artest and Battier on the floor at the same time. With Battier and Artest on the floor, they can provide the help defense for Tmac covering fast PGs that he can't cover plus he's got the size to handle big PGs like Williams and I'll take him in a matchup against Nash any day over Brooks. He's played PG in the past and if IRC he has been able to handle the press and been a pretty good playmaker and ball handler. If he can get to the rim and shoot at his career average 43% then why not try him at PG.

This is the part of the entire theory that makes no sense to me. When was Tracy last at what "we" or he would call "100%"? Seriously, for a three-month stretch... Was it ten years ago?

Tracy at "100%" next year would probably be what he's come to call 75%. Able to play 3 out of 4 games, with only infrequent bursts of lift and brilliant play. Without reliable legs, given the form of his jumper, you can bank on a declining FG% wherever he plays and however much he plays.

anyway, basically agreeing with you, tiger0330, that there is low probability that we can see him healthy. In terms of full health, I'd call it 0%.

This has been discussed hundreds of times and fails for hundreds of reasons. Most of which have already been mentioned.

And judging by Yao's history, Yao is supposed to be injured for at least 30 games this season right....

Good for offense.....but very bad for defense!! I think Tmac will still be a Rocket next year though but i think he should come off the bench play second group with Landry, Wafer, Lowry n Hayes. Like Spurs uses Ginobli. His FG% has been horrible since last 2 seasons so I think he would be bad as a starter. Current starting chemistry is awesome for the rockets n should continue this trend next year. Healthy Tmac coming off the bench would bolster our second group. Last 7-8 minutes of the 4th quarter n close games use Yao, Scola, Artest, Tmac n Brooks.

Limited minutes for Tmac will keep him out injury issues as well.

Whenever McGrady brings up the ball I cringe. McGrady is a scorer, the problem is we don't always need a dynamic scorer, more often than not we need a leader. In my book, Brooks is a far better leader than McGrady will ever be. The reason we are soo lacking in the point guard position is that our offense begs the point guard to be a scorer when there's a point drought. What we really need to do is drive the ball in, we need a slasher, an SF3 in his prime. We need people who cut to the basket. More often than not McGrady settles for the jumpshot, he doesn't drive anymore.

No ish. Magic something or other. I think he may be pretty good.

But yea, the premise of T-Mac playing point guard when he's already known to be a slacker on defense and will probably be a step or two slow next season after knee surgery? No thank you. One star.

You think he'd take on a smaller role? ...don't think so....he's gonna want another fat contract, he's going to be a liability going foward.....we need to move on.....this team plays better without him.

There's one big difference between McGrady and those two. He doesn't like to push the ball up the floor in transition. Can you imagine McGrady running a fast break? We'd set an all time low for least fast break points in a season.
