Because he has "potential." The guy has all the tools to be a great shooting guard. He's 6-6 with worlds of athleticism and a great shot. Yea we tried this with Swift and it didn't work out but JR Smith is still on his rookie contract so it wouldnt really cost much and the upside is still huge.

It's a cheap gamble that could pay big dividends. Plus we have garbage at the shooting guard spot so he would automatically be an upgrade over whatever we have.

I'd do the trade in a heartbeat, not only can he finish, but he can stroke it too. JVG is through with knuckleheads though, so from a realistic standpoint you'd have to say no...

Although highlights don't mean everything STRO  , here's a compilation from youtube, (watch for the cram on Deke, just nasty)

PS. I don't understand the soundtrack choice for this video, but anyway.

I would do it in a heart beat i dont really think this is a high risk trade because at a min. Smith will be close to as good as Head! AND if he maxs his potential he could be an all star and the the next Kobe to a lesser extent! I would love to do this trade and i think the Hornets would likely do it to if we could get Jr for next years pick or something i would jump through the roof! Because jr and head can man that 2 spot for years and years and years to come!

Id do it just to have another spark plug like swift you can say what you want about stro but i went to a game this season where we where down by 9 in the 4th stro threw down 2 monster jams and the place was rockin and we won!

He has all the potential to be a late bloomer Kobe!

potential doesnt win games. luther was clutch last year in several games, he always hustles, and he plays defense. if he has so much potential, dont you think NO would keep him if he's so cheap? the guy has no heart and he wont help the team at all.

Okay maybe after thinking about it no on the luther for jr but i think we should give them a top 12 protected pick for jr that would be awesome for us!

JR Smith doesn't fit "Win Now". It won't happen.

Although i agree that it won't happen, he has already proven he can play in this league. His 3pt% increased in his second season to 37%, and his ft% to 82% (sample sizes are small, admittedly). If we are comparing potential, which neither player has reached yet you'd have to say Jr Smith has more than Luther.

JR Smith does not fit the mentality that JVG is putting on the floor, that is why the trade will not happen, he won't even take the chance that the players attitude will be bad for the team, and i don't blame him.

I have the feeling that WIN NOW, in JVG's eyes, is more about mentality than talent, it always has been for him, how else can Juwan and Rybo get so many minutes.

A shame though, while Stro has been in the league for yrs and had many different coaches, JR has only been in this league for two seasons and had one coach, a change of scenery could be all he needs.

If Mike James does sign with Houston for the MLE, use the TE on JR Smith. Our backcourt rotation woud have crazy depth and athletism, Alston,James, Head, Smith, Tmac, and Battier!

What's up with this?? We want to develop young players, but we don't want to develop young players...... sheesh...... leave Head alone. If TMac goes down, Head might be our Tony Parker....... If we get Mike James(which I don't particularly care for) put him at the 2, Battier at PF, TMac at SF Yao, Juwan off the bench..... I can deal with that.

IMHO, if we are active beyound what happens with Mike James, we should only be worried about getting veterans who can contribute off the bench, or young'uns we can groom.....

    we don't need anymore starters.

did you read the description of the video: J.R. Smith, another NBA player out of high school who was not ready for the NBA, and did not have an NBA attitude. it's videos like this that confirm to me that any scrub can have a decent mix; even one that's only played for only 2 seasons on limited minutes on a garbage team. if Rudy Gay turns out like him, then there will be a lot of clutchfans shatting crow.

Did you read my post further down??? I said he does not fit the mentality of the team that JVG is trying to create and thus would not be a good fit. Therefore i don't blame JVG for not wanting him on the team.

I'd take the chance on him sure, but JVG won't and i have no problem with that.

as an armchair coach, you are entitled to wax theoretically as much as you want. but too many times have i seen these mixes: Stromile, Derek Anderson, Rafer Alston, and now J.J. Redick, Rudy Gay and J.R. Smith. i remember how easily i was fooled by them. these one dimensional mixes are not reflective of how these players fit in a team game. i think only Stro's mixes showed some glimpse of defensive abilities (shot blocking), and Alston's showed passing ability. strangely, i haven't seen or heard of any mixes from a solid 5 year veteran in Battier.

but i will say this much, if i were the coach/gm, i would care less and less about pure athleticism and go for fundamentals and mental strength (and to a degree, maturity and consistency) everytime. ideally, i would want both, as just one, even the better one, probably isn't enough. but if i had to choose...

my sentiments exactly. I think the NBA is waking up to the risks of overpaying knucklehead types based on "length", "verticals" and "potential". Just look at the rediculous contracts they are trying to dump on players like Miles. I hope the momentum swings back to taking sound fundamental players who understand the team concept of basketball.

It looks like JR Smith is going to be traded along with PJ Brown to Chicago for Tyson Chandler. Oh, well.

It doesn't matter about JVG wanting this cat, JVG will not be here after the allstar break when the Rockets are in the last place in SW Division, behind the Hornets who have surpassed the Rockets.

And this would occur, with all due respect, due to what brilliant reasoning on your part?
