Could someone please explain this obsession with Boki?

I think a lot of it has to do with everyone wanting to see Boki used in a way that capitalizes on his abilities. Casual Rockets watchers probably think he is supposed to be the second coming of Matt Bullard, when he can actually put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket and create for himself a little. I think the fascination comes with people wanting to see this side of his game before he is shipped out without ever getting to show his true game.

i really dont mind that we aren't going for these stupid contracts. I would like to see how boki, gaines, and some other players get better...just give them the playing time. i think mcgrady and yao will open up holes for these players to develop into something. a lot of pressure is going to be taken off of them to make huge plays. they just need to get in the routine and feel of the game better. and if they dont pan out well... well i guess just get new guys then huh?

I am a African American ROX fan and I root for Boki because he is 6'9 and can shoot the rock. He is athletic and knows how to shut his pie hole unlike so many bench riding NBA ballers. I actually think he will be the ROX future at the SF position. I hope that he turns into a young Peja or a smaller Nowitski. He seems to have heart and to be somewhat fearless.(ask Karl Malone) I like that in a player and think he will up his game this season with improved minutes. :)

It's a Catch-22: if the guy only plays 5 minutes twice a year, we say he sucks and dump him. However, if we don't give him the opportunity to play more, he never develops. The NBA (and, for that matter, professional sports in general) has been full of players that, given the right circumstances, could have developed into good, if not great, players.

Here's an NFL example for you: Andre Ware won the Heisman trophy (no easy feat, despite what some people say). He's drafted by the Detroit Lions, who proceed to bench him for two and a half years. Ware had skills, but they languished on the bench, and as a result, his career is largely considered a failure.

Boki may never be more than another stiff, but he has potential, and I think wasted potential is one of the most tragic things in the world. Add his potential to his work-ethic, great attitude, and the heart he displays on court, and you end up with a fan favorite, regardless of the color of his skin (just ask Mario Elie or Chuckie Brown).
