Could someone please explain this obsession with Boki?

I understand the casual fan's obsession with BoKi.

But I don't understand Sam's obsession with being a buzzkill.
    What do you care ?

Sam says Elvis is just a whiteman playing the blackman's music.

Sam says the seven origianal astronauts were just trained monkeys in a tin can.

Sam says John Wayne uses a stunt double.

Sam says Elway only great because defenses tired out in the fourth quarter at Mile High.

Sam says Kennedy just a no-good philanderer.

Sam says Lance Armstrong has weight advantge with only one testicle.

Ya know, the reason Matt Maloney was disparaged by the fans was the FACT that he wasn't as white as Boki!

At least that's what Matt Maloney(Sam Fisher?) likes to think. :D

Ya know....thats a helluva question I would like to see answered.

Just why in the hell does it matter to those of you who dont understand why some players are fan favorites?

is it hurting you in some way?
or do you just enjoy disparaging someone's favorite players?

for a multitude of reasons, I like the underdog...I like to cheer for someone to prove their doubters wrong...especially in this case where there is a kid who has gotten very little chance to get confortable with the pace of the game, someone who until just recently has had the deer in the headlights look everytime he got in the game....but has shown flashes of improvement....isnt it in the Rockets best interests for this kid to pan out?

He is tall, athletic, and runs the floor well.....isnt that the type of player we need?

Why cant you at least cheer for him to prove he can be a player?

are you so taken up with your need to be some studly objective basketball expert, that you cant at least cheer for someone to do better than he has if it helps the team you purport to support?

Griffin was the No. 7 pick and Boki was the No. 15 pick so people get mad at Griffin because people had big expectations of him. Griffin got an unfair chance to be a starter but he blew it. Boki has never given the Rockets bad publicity, Griffin has. I personally would like to have both in our team because I don't think they're scrubs, either of them. They are pro Bball players with grater talent than any of us, so who are we to call a pro a scrub? Griffin and Boki fully developed could be a very good thing for the Rockets. I personally would like for the Rockets to pick up Griffin but he has to earn his minutes just like Boki. So I ain't hatin on anyone just cuz tha color.(Ok i can't talk street, what do you expect I live in Cinco Ranch.)

You guys get so hyped up about this. I hope he does well too.

However I assess his value as an NBA player with my head rather than my heart.

I hope he does well, but thus far he hasn't done much, so if he's gone as cap filler to Orlando or something like that, I'm not going to start a thread that says "BOKI must STAY!" or anything like that....or go on and on about how he should be the starting point guard. Then it just gets kind of silly.

He can stay if he can play. But if somebody better takes his place who isn't particularly exciting or is attractive to root for, then I'm all for it (as long as he's not beating up his teammates and shooting at his girlfriend.)

Shoot, I didn't even address him really in this thread, the only reason why I entered was when somebody claimed that race/ethnicity isn't a factor when people talk about players, when it clearly is.

Why does race always get brought up. Sometimes it's a factor, and sometimes it isn't.

I want Boki to do well, so I can convince myself that the Rocket's haven't completely lost their ability to judge talent.

Boki often reminded me of Dirk Nowisky(excuse me for the spelling), only a smaller version. Remember when Dirk emerged as a star? Around 25, if I remember correctly. Boki is only 23 years old. He needs playing time, though.

    Why I like Boki

    He's a Rudy guy...
Works hard on the court whenever he's out.
He was the guy ignored because of Yao Ming in the draft.
I got his rookie card and got it autographed. :D
Rode the bench all of 2003. Didn't compain.
Took a cheapshot from Malone...drew charges on Malone...then, "the block"

All these factors contributed to Bokimania.

Plus, "Money...it's gotta be the shoes!...er..Hair."

No, it's just you who is making a mountain out of a molehill and who is constructing a "bizarre obsession" which is not there...

Again, constructing facts to support a weak argument...

Nobody really said that overall, it is absolutely not a factor. Some posters said it is not a factor for them, and you cannot really dispute that if that is how they feel. You are making the false assertion that there is a "bizarre obsession" and from there on, you are basically arguing with yourself; just about the only argument you stand a chance of winning on this matter :).

    Keep trying... :D

I want to see him do well too. And I actually do like him. He hustles and brings a lot of energy everytime he steps on the court and I actually even liked Moochie! (still do) But just as Sam Fisher said replying to this, I look at the facts when actually analyzing their ability. Boki hasn't proven anything in two years now. So while I have no problem with people rooting for the underdog or liking Boki for whatever reason that doesn't mean I'm not starting to find it annoying when I see people doing things like saying we should cancel the T-Mac trade if Boki is thrown in or projecting their starting line ups for the Rockets and having Jim Jackson listed as Boki's back up. I even saw one where they proposed we trade for Al Harrington, but when they showed the respective line up changes, Harrington was the back up to Boki. I had looked over it three times trying to find some indication they were joking, it wasn't there.

Anyway, I've enjoyed this thread because to some extent my question has been answered. I still think some people are taking it entirely too far but it's neat to see all the different reasons people like Boki. :D

Larry Bird said it all. The NBA ticketholders are majority white and there is an assertive effort to add more player that look like themself. This explain the recent trend of drafting alot of foreign players in anticipation of some of them panning out as NBA players. This also explain why some Rockets fans are obsessed with Nachbar, naive to the fact that we should have had Tayshaun Prince, a much better talent.

If Nachbar was black he would have been heavily criticized for not producing after two years, because of the high standard that black players have created for themselves.

Yanno, the reason I didn't want to see Boki included in the deal to Orlando was just from my understanding that he would be a throw-in so that we could include Reece Gaines. Frankly, I'd rather have a benchwarmer who was picked at #15 spot by the Rockets than a benchwarmer who was picked at the #15 spot by Orlando.

Plus, I really think that any player with talent and altheticism who works hard will be a player in this league. From everything I've been hearing, Boki's been working hard this summer.

Jackie, I've addressed all your points before and cited evidence thereof so I'm not going to rehash them. Suffice it to say, if you read the thread, you'll see them, made by me and others in this thread.

    New question:

What's up with your bizarre obsession with me? Have I replaced MacBeth in your pantheon of people you want to pick fights with? If so, you're doing a good job. BTW, I'd like to honestly know what you think my ethnic background is, and how you know this information.

Not really, but I'll let it go so that you can somewhat save face.

I just like poking fun at people when they happen to try to come off as oh-so-much-smarter than "you guys" (yes, that is a term frequently used in those instances, e.g. by you in this thread) in some of their posts, but really only in the threads where they do that, and when they at the same time keep rambling and making an incorrect point over and over. I don't have a general issue with you or anyone, though, on the contrary, I find a lot of your stuff witty and often agree with your points :).

I have no idea, and frankly - it should not make a difference at all :D.

    P.S.:

BOKI IS A BADASS - I HOPE HE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRADE AND HE SHOULD GET MORE MINUTES!
