I think it would be preferrable to have someone else bring the ball up court and sometimes have Pike or Boki and JJ waiting at different corners, while Yao mans the post and T-Mac is free to roam. That's a lot of options right there...you throw it in to Yao, he throws it to either Pike or JJ or T-Mac...Pike or JJ would perhaps shoot immediately if they are open, T-Mac might take it to the basket more often, then Yao would have to get out of the way... Either way, I think that, in theory, we would already have a lot of options. I am looking forward to seeing some more games next season!
Pike would be horrible at the point. He is more of a catch and shoot type player. He is not a very good dribbler, his drive to the basket is very awkward, and he is very, very slow. Defensively he would be a huge liability. Last year he could barley keep up with the shooting guards and small forwards. How could he possibly keep up with the quick point guards?
I think the original post is "in response" to so may people saying "all we need from our PG is dump the ball in to Yao/hand off to TMac, and make the open three". I think the response demonstrates that the PG job is much more complex than just the main components.
people.. i hear your thoughts and i realize that Pike isnt our top candidate and I understand the plethora of difficulties with this such as: - his very average ball handling skills - inability to create for others - potential liability on defense however, tell me what makes Pike so much worse than John Paxson? Paxson was the prototypical PG to play along side MJ. I think we all agree that TMAC is a good ball handler, why cant this be like MJ/Paxson and TMAC/Pike? believe me, I wish we had a stud pg but it isnt gonna happen. i still remain hopeful that we can trade for someone decent but if not, we may have to become creative and this idea may deserve some merit. thanks again for every one who replied!
I didn't notive Hoiberg is a FA. He is pretty good 3pt shooter. We should try to get him if the price is right. I have one concern: his shooting % is all over the place from year to year.
I like Piatkowski and genuinely hope he returns to the stat lines he put up with the Clipps. Unfortunately, Pike was one of the few Rox who ran a fastbreak worse that Francis. I'll pass.
That's right, he must be able to DRIBBLE the ball up court without turning it over , before he can dump the ball in to Yao or T-mac. Then he can sit back and wait to make the open three.
Exactly. Thats all that both Pike and Paxson had along with their above average b-ball IQ. If Paxson could do it, there is a chance that Pike can do it as well.
I don't want us to go get another bad contract, just so we can fill the PG position this year. Maybe its time to give Gaines the ball, and see if he turns into the player he was most compared to in college, and becomes the next Dwayne Wade. If he doesn't, then do something during winter trading season, but not in this FA seller's market. ... and please, CD, find a way to snag Duhon from Chicago, before they realize how valuable he'll be to them.
