I also agree with everything but #1. I hate giving up 1st rounders to get rid of contracts, but I especially hate doing it for 1, or 2 years of a small-to-midland contract. And it's only good if you actually do something with the capspace (as Bima stated).

I think the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reason we did the trade was to get "Motie". It was reported that they had good intel someone was going to tale him between 20-23. Iirc Portland, and Denver were the 2 teams between us, and I think we just really wanted him. The fact that we were dealing with Kahn didn't hurt either. lol

And from Minny's end, I think they needed to get rid of Flynn, so there would be no extra drama with Rubio coming in. And if you notice, virtually everytime they trade down they pick up cash in the deal. Or should I say the owner picks up the cash.

We may not be LA, or NY, but I really feel sorry for the fans of teams like Minnesota, and Phoenix(Sarver) who look for places to cut costs at almost every turn.

    Yeah, I just saw that.

I can just hear that conversation now:

Morey: "Wait a minute! The younger, better, cheaper player on the last year of his contract who you're trying to trade to me (in exchange for our older, worse, more expensive player who also has some guaranteed money after next season) might have an injury that might affect him down the road!"

Kahn: "Uh . . . okay, here, please take what will likely be a top-35 pick in next year's very deep draft. Please don't walk away from this deal (in which you traded up to our #20 pick to take a kid you have already admitted was graded as a lottery pick on your draft board).

    Morey (ever-so-coyly): "Hmmm . . . Okay, fine."

    ;)

I think the problem is that, by the time the medical issue was raised, the Wolves had already agreed use the 23rd pick to first trade for the 28th and then the 31st pick (and got other assets in the process). As such, if the initial deal blows up, the whole chain of deals hits the fan and creates major chaos.

    sadness, PURE sadness

I think Morey should be friend with Kahn, and name his first child David.

Yep. The funny thing is, if the conversation ever got heated, I could just see Morey tell Kahn:

"Look. You let the Bulls take Nikola Mirotic (the single best "stash pick" in this draft and also a lottery-caliber talent) with MY pick. We've got enough young players on our roster as it is. I can live with my team the way it was, plus Mirotic's draft rights, just fine. How about you???"

That's what I think, too. Morey can probably live with Mirotic, or at least convincingly act like he can. Kahn would be stuck unless Chicago likes D-Mo and is willing to add him to the roster right away-- not sure if they do since they have a pretty full front court and coach Tommy T ain't big on guys who don't defend.

Kahn is such an amateur, it's ridiculous.

If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker.

so, in summary, the wolves basically traded down 3 spots (in our trade), took on a little salary, in exchange for moving up probably 10-20 spots from the 2nd round into the 1st in a couple years (and they are only having to give up that 2nd rounder because they were hiding a flynn injury?), right?

    am i missing anything?

the trade is fine...morey is obviously high on donatas, so he made a move for him, but i really don't understand why it's being viewed as such a one-sided, no-brainer of a trade.

On the one hand, we didnt want Miller back, thats for sure.

But on the other, it seems Morey had a lot of leverage in this situation. Couldnt we have got more than a 2nd rounder?

They already owe their 2012 first round pick to the Clippers (Traded Marko Jaric, Lionel Chambers to Timberwolves for Sam Cassell, 2006 first round pick (protected top 10 through 2011, unprotected in 2012) (?-?) on 2005-08-12
    Round 2).

So, if you wanted a first round pick, the first one they could have offered was 2014 due to not being able to trade consecutive future 1st round picks.

If the 2014 1st was on the table, I would have taken that. But we dont know if it was.

    Guys, don't be greedy!

Also, cardpire, you're conveniently forgetting the part where we get a quality young PG in Flynn who can actually PLAY, albeit perhaps not at a high lottery level.

I doubt it was. Just throwing out something some people would want more than a 2nd round pick in a deep draft...

Im not sure id call asking for a first rounder to replace a #6 pick that may be broken, being greedy. Not to mention the lack of disclosure on Minny's part.

I hope Morey didn't burn bridges over a 2nd round pick... we still want to trade with Kahn in the future...

not really...you are conveniently calling him a quality PG though. i consider brad miller a quality backup center, and so would the bulk of this board, if not for a few untimely gaffs at the end of the season. also, we don't need flynn. throw in whatever this injury stuff is, the rumors that minn shopped him and couldnt trade him (anywhere else), the rumors that we immediately shopped him and couldn't find any suitors...all that adds up to him barely playing for us this year and leaving for greener pastures next year. i don't mind losing miller, but the bottom line is, we have 2 capable pgs and zero capable centers. that part of the trade helps us monetarily, but hurts us personnell-wise in the short-term (and, IMO, only the short-term is relevant regarding these 2 players).

but anyway, i'm deducing that you are essentially saying that the trade would be somewhere around a wash to leaning in their favor without flynn and miller swapped, but since flynn and miller were swapped, that turns the trade into a complete jamjob and no-brainer in our favor?
