On the Flathead National Forest, which surrounds Glacier National Park... Performs as a crew member on a two-person crew in the collection of bear hair within an assigned Subunit of the Northern Divide Grizzly Bear DNA Project Area. Navigates to pre-determined hair collections sites using a compass, map, or Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. Assists in the construction of hair collection sites following detailed protocol using barbed wire and baiting the site with a liquid lure of rotted animal matter. Identifies and records habitat and vegetative characteristics of the site and maintains accurate records of all data collected. Revisits each constructed site within a rigid timetable, and assists in the collection of all hair samples in compliance with strict protocol. Assists in assuring all collected data and samples arrive at collection points in a timely manner and in good condition. Assists with logistical operations of the project by transporting equipment and supplies throughout the Subunit by backpacking. Conducts field work in a safe manner. Incumbents must be in excellent physical condition. Backpacking and hiking is done in remote, rugged and mountainous terrain. Duties include backpacking with loads up to 80 lbs. and hiking as many as 5-20 miles per day.
