I tend not to have alcohol with my meals, but if I do or anyone in my party does, I'll add accordingly.

I'm a waiter, but at a Greenspoint area restaurant. And outside of the business lunches with people who know how to tip, I'm lucky to even get 10% with the normal folks that go to dinner. So with that experience, I'm normally an 18-25% tipper with a minimum of 5 dollar tip or so no matter what I eat. I wouldn't mind a real wage serving tables though.

That's pretty much what I do, regardless of the service from the waiter/waitress. I feel like I shouldn't tip a bad service that much, but I always feel bad. And it's a rare occurrence when there is great waiting to deserve extra.

Another question... why are tips percentage based? Is it harder for a waiter to bring me food at Papa's Steak House than it is at Denny's?

Most people at those jobs get paid more than $2.15 an hour

So do waiters. The restaurant has to make up the difference to get them up to minimum wage at least.
Either way, I think it is stupid that waiters don't get paid at least minimum wage and that the public has to subsidize their income. Just pay waiters a salary like you do every other job and do away with tips.

I somewhat agree with this, if restaurants would just raise a waiter's salary to minimum wage. There are a lot of people that bust their butts for minimum wage, but they don't get tipped for it.

It's a classic argument, but I think the thing is if waiters get paid more, then your food would cost more to make up the difference. Plus I wonder if your service would suffer since waiters would be getting paid anyway. I've never been to Europe to experience that.

sorry, but tipping more b/c someone is attractive is even worse. people shouldn't be rewarded just b/c they got lucky in the gene pool.

I always wondered about this. Is ordering the $20 ribeye + $5 beer really any different from getting the $8 burger and $2 soda? (Increase the fanciness of the restaurant and expensiveness of the meals to further exaggerate this effect.)

well, you get better service in a nice steakhouse than denny's. honestly i think the waiters who clean up the most are the ones that work at pappa's and pappadeaux's. not the most expensive restaurants, because there isn't the volume, and not the lower level chains because the meals aren't as expensive.

the barista at star bucks is on his feet all day but i'll be damned if i'm gonna pay $10 for large frappachino. like i said, i tip what i think is fair and i've never left without tipping even when the service was bad. tipping 50% or more is what i find ludicrous. to each his own.

When you wait tables you're taxed on a % of your sales. You can theoretically lose money through lousy tippers.

But what about fabulous people? I think they deserve more in tips.

I try my best to tip as well as possible. At least 15%. I'm pretty simple and don't demand a lot.
