I don't understand all the love myself. In what other aspect of your life is it so cool to overpay? Get a good car salesman... do you get props because you paid more than you should? Toll road is nice and clear as you drive to work... throw $5 in change instead?
I tip for good service but unless you get good service all the time, I don't see what's so 'cool' about tipping 100% unless you're getting coffee or a bagel at a diner.

i was at a poker table at coushatta about 7 years ago, the bad beat jackpot hit, and the winner of the loser's share was a 70-something year old. he won 32k, and when the money came, he tipped the dealer 3k. i assumed he was rich.

a little while later, i was talking to one of the room managers, and she said the guy is a regular in the room, and he lived in a trailer park a few miles away.

he never got national press for that.

I think it has to do with all the crap waiters/waitresses take from customers. Its usually not the owner or cook who deals with all that stress, so yeah its cool when they get rewarded..... they get paid peanuts for all this dog poo they have to take to the face.....

I usually tip about 20% unless its a small bill, I might at least make sure its a couple bucks.

There have been a few times I got such terrible service I tipped 1 dollar on a 30 dollar bill.

Rich guy tips a big amount.

It happens all over the world with rich people. Big deal.

I used to wait so I understand what you mean. However...

    1) It's their chosen profession and this is inherent in that specific profession.
    2) It's how you handle these situations. Food late or not cooked properly, if the waiter handles it right (constant updates, etc) normal people don't slam them for that.

There are a lot of tough jobs out there. Most blue collar jobs are. IMO, I think tips are stupid. Just pay these people a good salary and do away with tips.

I have always been a pretty good tipper but after trying to wait tables for two weeks way back in 1998 I realized that I was in the minority. Most people are cheap, selfish, rude a-holes when they go out to eat (and probably everywhere else in life). Since then I have tipped less than 20% only once and it was because the waitress must have mistaken my brother and I for someone she hated because she made it a point to give us the worst service I have ever had.

As a rule, I tip anywhere from 25-50% on bills over $20. Anything less than that and the percentage goes up. If you're a cute girl and actually give great service you are probably looking at a very, very generous tip.

I agree with most here, if I was super rich I would give the wait staff outrageous tips when they gave me good service.

Tipping 15-20% is more than enough unless I'm getting something complimentary. I've been a regular in enough places to know this.

Sure its a standard and acceptable, but some people just like to make other people's day, so we will leave up to 50% or 100% sometimes. I once gave a guy in Best Buy $100 for answering a few computer questions for me because I was feeling generous and had some to spare that day. It made my day to know that I made his day, based on the smile on his face.

Too bad you probably got him fired. You can't accept tips unless it's part of the job. :D

At that point, you really aren't paying for your MEAL. You are simply just being generous and giving somoene who's on their feet all day and busting their ass a gift. I guess some people won't ever understand that and that's sad.

I remember at Outback Steakhouse one time we had a waitress actually came up to us and thanked us for being so polite to her throughout the meal because she was having the day from hell until then.

I gave her a nice tip.

That's fine. I got no problem with that. But there are a thousand other jobs out there with people who are on their feet all day and bust their ass. And you don't get looked down upon because you don't 'make their day' every time you use their service.
I normally tip 15-20%. But threads like this make it seem like you're treating them inhumanely by not giving them more.

I think 15-20% range is fine, sometimes if the service is good and the general vibe as well... I might give a little extra.

There is nothing wrong with spreading around a little kindness every once in a while though, these people work for tips.

Double the tax (in Texas) and add the remaining balance to make it an even dollar amount.

    Done.

What exactly constitutes great service to go above and beyond that? I expect them to have a smile on their face, bring out the correct order, and refill my glass of water. That's the extent of the their service that I care for.

that doesn't work if you have alcoholic beverages.
