I'm surprised that people outside of the SE have heard of Widespread. But they are, next to Phish, one of the best jam bands around. I went to see them in Phillips and they played a tremendous show.

A close friend of mine introduced me to Zero 7 a while back. I really enjoyed their stuff. Lately, I've been into Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, and Wookiefoot.

Any recommendations that are similar to DT or LTE? I've been digging that stuff a LOT.

IIRC, I remember really digging them at some listening station in Circuit City. Very mellow.

If it was six months ago, they were getting pretty heavy airplay. I bought their CD in late June, early July and the single "Harder to Breathe" was all over the radio. And I don't even listen to the radio. :D

Rooney, I dig. You'd be very surprised at how revealing the new music stand at Target can be!!

Widespread is huge in Austin. They get tons of pub when they play at The Backyard.

    Thanks DC!

I am going to bookmark this thread! "The Soft Bulletin" is going to be my next Flaming Lips CD, but I was wondering what to get after that one.

Oh and HEAD - I just ordered "The Moon and Antarctica" as I have heard good things about that CD.

yeah, they even have a DVD "Live at The Backyard." last time they were in town, one of my fraternity brothers went to all three shows - fri night, sat night, and sun night. pretty big following 'round these parts.

Cool. They are one of the few rock bands I actually still like.

Thanks for starting this thread, Drewdog. I've been looking for an outlet to talk about the Silver Jews, my happiest musical discovery in ages. I'm so into the first CD I bought, I haven't even made it to the one Jews fans rave about. I've got Bright Flight, which I just can't recommend enough. American Water is supposed to be their best, and it allegedly contributed in part to Stephen Malkmus leaving Pavement (he said they'd never be able to make an album that good). I can't imagine it could be better than Bright Flight, but I'm gonna definitely buy it as soon as I can manage to stop listening to BF.

I'm also listening to a ton of Horseshoe and Greg Wood lately, which is something of a rediscovery. Horseshoe's a Houston band, fronted by Greg Wood. Their official releases are King of the World and Moving the Goods, which are both great. Greg recently released a solo album called Ash Wednesday as well, featuring several Horseshoe players and produced by Jesse Dayton.

actually... Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots should be your first one, then get Soft Bulletin. Yoshimi is by far their best release to date.

I hope you got the extended version (with extra tracks!!) Good choice!

rockHEAD, I am continually amazed at how similar our musical tastes are. Did you catch the thread I started recently with a link to Modest Mouse's video. It is off the new album.

The Moon and Antartica is fantastic. Lives is my favorite track.

    I do have Yoshimi already.

I don't know if the one I ordered had extra tracks or not, but I guess I will find out soon!

God, I love waiting on new CDs to come - it is like being a little kid at Christmas again!

Been listening to Neutral Milk Hotel and the Weakerthans. Nice and mellow.

Sometimes you just gotta do something old and familiar so I've also been playing Bush- Sixteen Stone and Green Day- Dookie like no ones business.

    From the "The Strokes" thread:

The Strokes - Is This It
Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights
The Postal Service - Give Up
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating...
The Shins - Oh Inverted World
The White Stripes - De Stijl
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
    Elliott Smith - Either/Or

I'm adding The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots along with the list rudager provided.

    ET,

Those are some great choices, but if you really like the White Stripes CD, look at their latest, "Elephant" - that CD kicks some serious ass!

I was actually thinking about swiping that cd from someone the other day. Right now I'd have to say my preference is The Postal Service and was looking into Dntel - Life is Full of Possibilities. Have you heard anything about this one?

No Silver Jews fans out there? That's disappointing.

Name sounds vaguely familiar but I bet that either rudager or Palmray or both of them have that CD. Maybe one of them or both will post in this thread and let us know.
